Microsoft Office looks set to land on Apple devices soon

Despite Redmond denials

WINDOWS PUSHER MICROSOFT has hotly denied that it will release a version of Office for the Apple Ipad. But its response indicates that a version could indeed be on the way soon.

The argy bargy started on Tuesday evening, when The Daily published a story claiming that an Ipad version of the Microsoft productivity suite is set to be submitted to Apple for approval.

"The app's user interface is similar to the current OneNote app, but it has hints of Metro, the new design language that can be seen in Windows Phone and in the as-yet-[un]released Windows 8 desktop operating system," noted The Daily, adding that the application suite could be launched "in the coming weeks".

Even if this were the case, there would likely be a gap of several months before users got their hands on Office. Apple likes to take its time over approvals to keep up the impression of allowing only high-quality apps, such as Ifart Mobile, onto its expensive fruit branded devices.

However, Microsoft was quick to try to dampen the ensuing excitement over Office for the Ipad, sending out the curt statement, "The story is based on inaccurate rumours and speculation. We have no further comment."

The Redmond firm also tweeted:

However, Peter Ha, founder of The Daily, retailiated via Twitter with, "We did not fabricate either image. A working version of the app was demoed to us by someone at Microsoft."

In an attempt to stall expectations over the report, Microsoft tweeted that all would become clear on this rumour "in the coming weeks", a phrase originally used by The Daily. But this indicates that there's some form of Office for IOS in the pipeline.

However, here at The INQUIRER we wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft uses this to launch a new marketing campaign to boost uptake of Windows Phone devices.

"Looking for a great productivity app for your mobile, but stuck without Office for IOS? Why not give Windows Phone a try? It's perfectly optimised for your favourite Office tools." µ
