UK MOBILE OPERATOR O2 and digital communications agency Isobar have teamed up to launch the Isobar Create London event for near field communications (NFC) developers.
The event will take place in London on 24 March and will see 100 developers compete to create the best NFC app. They will have 36 hours to do so and the winners will get funding and marketing support to launch the app.
Neil Rutter, head of NFC at O2 said, "We are really excited about the possibilities that Contactless offers. We look forward to helping bring some of the fresh thinking and new possibilities generated in this event into our customers' everyday lives."
Developers can register for the event now and will be judged by O2, Isobar and Blackberry. Various aids will be available including NFC enabled handsets from Samsung and Blackberry as well as demo code.
Brendan Marry, lead NFC engineer at Google Europe will also be making a guest appearance.
The submitted apps will be judged in categories including impact on consumer, impact on brand or business, level of innovation and novelty factor.
Runners-up in the competition will win prizes such as smartphones and "swag". The apps built must relate to retail, sporting events, finance or leisure and entertainment.
Dom O'Brien, head of innovation at Isobar said, "NFC is an exciting new technology that's going to have a big impact on all our lives. Isobar Create London is an open event for the best developers and designers to come together to accelerate knowledge and understanding of how NFC will impact sporting events and the leisure and retail industries." µ
