Samsung considers selling its LCD flat screen business

An unexpected development
Wed Feb 15 2012, 15:04

KOREAN ELECTRONICS GIANT Samsung is considering spinning off or selling its loss-making liquid crystal display (LCD) flat screen business.

According to Reuters, this surprise development comes as Samsung shifts its components business towards OLED displays. These are predicted to be the next-generation technology that will replace LCD TVs.

Samsung recently ended its LCD joint venture with Sony.

Industry analysts had expected Samsung to take full control of the LCD operation and merge it with its OLED flat screen business.

However the LCD industry is having a tough time. LG Display recently booked a loss for the fifth consecutive quarter and Sharp is forecasting a record 290 billion yen ($3.70 billion) net loss for the year to March. µ

you have to laugh at technology

I love the way a new technological progress works. You start with a new embryonic technology like LCD, with awful performance and extremely high prices. Then over a period of time the performance is improved and the prices come down. Finally you end up with the technology performing brilliantly just as the profits go down the gurgler, and the tech is retired in favor of the next big thing .. which of course starts off at a nice beefy price point. Why is it that the better something gets, the less its worth, till finally its worth nothing?
