Microsoft says all Windows 8 Metro apps will run on ARM

Working closely with Nvidia, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments

SOFTWARE REDEVELOPER Microsoft claims that all Metro style applications on its upcoming Windows Store will support both x86 and ARM based devices running Windows 8.

Microsoft outlined its broad plans for Windows on ARM (WOA), claiming users will not see any difference between Windows 8 running on x86 or ARM processors. Microsoft also confirmed that all Metro style applications will work on Windows 8 running on either ARM or x86 processors.

According to Microsoft it has been collaborating with ARM vendors Nvidia, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments. The firm claimed that its software was running on all three chip vendors' hardware, though it didn't release any information - even a teaser - about any final product(s).

Microsoft stressed that WOA will have the same sorts of applications, including its own versions of Word, Excel and Powerpoint along with Internet Explorer 10. It's an important point for it to make because Microsoft knows that applications sell mobile operating systems.

Although Microsoft waxed lyrical about its support for the ARM architecture, the firm also said it "had a deeper level of collaboration with Intel and AMD on the full breadth of PC offerings than in any past release". However Microsoft knows Intel and AMD don't hold the key for its future success but ARM, and it is clear that ARM vendors have gotten the most attention.

At this stage WOA looks to be on track but the company needs to show off prototype devices that punters will actually want to buy. After all, it won't be possible to flash Android tablets to run WOA. µ

Fast

Windows 8 is fast on x86. Would I like it faster? Always.

Free from bloatware ?

I wish for a simple OS compatible with most devices rather than a complex OS but with lots of half baked bundled applications. If we need any application we should be able to download. Being fast and responsive is more important that having jack of all applications bundled with slow windows.
