SOFTWARE REDEVELOPER Microsoft will release its Windows 8 Preview later this month.

Our sister IT news web site V3 has seen invitations for the preview launch, which will take place in Barcelona on 29 February during Mobile World Congress (MWC). It will be the first public showing of Microsoft's large patch to Windows 7 for tablets, er, next generation PC operating system.

Although Microsoft hasn't said anything specific yet, the event most likely will launch the public beta version of Windows 8. It had previously said that it would release the public beta this month and the preview event falls on the last day of the month.

If the public beta tips up on time, that makes it more likely that Microsoft will release the full version of Windows 8 this year.

Unlike previous versions, Windows 8 has been designed for tablets as well as traditional PCs and laptops. It will have a Metro style interface and an integrated app store similar to Windows Phone 7.

The latest feature of the Windows 8 OS that Microsoft has announced is application suspension, which will improve power efficiency. µ

Remember the Star Trek/Windows rule

With Star Trek, only the even-numbered movies are good, and with Windows, only the odd-numbered versions are good.

It's like Moore's Law. People say it's not a law, but it's held up through tens of technological generations. Same thing with Windows. Windows 8 is going to suck hard, I guarantee it.
