HACKTIVIST GROUP Anonymous has targeted four Brazilian banks in a recent attack.

The Brazilian branch of Anonymous has attacked the web sites of four major banks in Brazil in protest over economic inequality in the country. Bradesco, Itau, Banco do Brasil and HSBC have been attacked but not with the aim to defraud customers, according to Agence France Presse.

Anonymous Brazil tweeted:

Translated into English it says, "# OpWeeksPayment - Sailors WARNING: Target reached! The @ BancodoBrasil is drifting! TANGO DOWN!"

A more recent tweet said, "# OpWeeksPayment - Sailors WARNING: Target reached! HSBC is drifting! TANGO DOWN!"

However, Banco do Brazil denied the attack on Twitter and said, "Bank of Brazil has peaks in the volume of traffic to the site, with moments of sluggishness. This fact does not compromise the security of data."

Anonymous has been responsible for many attacks recently including assaults on Irish government web sites. It also hit out at US government web sites following the US orchestrated international takedown of Megaupload. µ
