SOFTWARE HOUSE Microsoft will minimise its controversial ribbon interface in Windows 8 by default.
Microsoft had previously written about the impending arrival of its ribbon interface in Windows 8 but the firm has gotten customer feedback to the extent that it will not maximise the interface by default on its upcoming operating system revision. According to Microsoft's data the vast majority of users did not change the size of the ribbon bar, with only six per cent minimising it if it was maximised.
Microsoft's data showed that 23 per cent of users would maximise the ribbon interface if it were minimised - a figure that Ilana Smith, a lead program manager on Microsoft's engineering system team described as 'heartening'. Although Smith said the data Microsoft has collected from Windows 8 beta users is not representative of the wider public, she went on to say that 'power users' preferred maximising the ribbon bar.
Smith also announced changes to the dialogue box to fix file copying conflicts. Windows 8 will have the option of setting Windows to skip copying files with the same date and size in a bid to reduce the time users spend faffing around finding duplicate files.
Smith mentioned Microsoft is working hard to reduce lag within the operating system. The times Smith bandied about are in the milliseconds and it is good to see Microsoft claiming to pay such attention to detail.
Microsoft is expected to release Windows 8 at the tail end of 2012, with the firm hoping its next operating system will find its way onto desktops, laptops and most importantly, tablets. µ

IT USED TO BE "DISK" OPERATING SYSTEM AND THE INTENTION WAS TO ENABLE THE USER TO ACCESS ALL THE SYSTEM RESOURCES. THE OPERATING SYSTEM TURNED INTO A CONTROLLER AND WHAT IT CONTROLS IS THE USER. THE OS CONCEPT SHOULD BE ON ITS LAST LEGS NOW.
LOOK IF YOU CAN MAKE ANY APPLICATION NECESSARY IN HTML5 THEN WHAT DO YOU NEED BESIDES A BROWSER ON A COMPUTER?
AS SOON AS HTML5 TAKES OFF I WONT BE USING -ANY- OPERATING SYSTEM EVER AGAIN. NO ANDROID, NO WINDOWS, NO IOS, NONE OF THAT KRAP. IT WILL BE JUST MOZILLA AND HTML5 AND NOTHING BUT THE JUICIEST OF LIP SMACKIN APPS.
SORRY FOR SHOCKING AND DAMAGING YOUR PSYCHE BY SHARING MY PERSONAL OPINION, FOR CRISSAKE! MORK SAID TO TELL YOU, "SHEZBUT".
So long as the LoseDoze 8 Operating System (O/S) maintains the ability to install the internet and browse the web and point and click and cut and paste and multitask - basically everything that is so DIFFICULT if not outright IMPOSSIBLE to do with any other O/S - all will be happy, ribbon or no ribbon, it is of no consequence.
Die Ribbon Die
Most users are not Power(??) users. The Ribbon interface makes users try icon after icon, searching for the desired function. This frustrates, but does not educate them.
The Ribbon is akin to. forcing a hunt-and-peck typist to use a keyboard without letters.
I have to grind the keyboard daily to produce large complicated technical documents (1000+ pages, 1000+ illustrations).
I never asked for a ribbon interface, don't like it, and it slows me down doing my job.
Is that clear enough MS?
Why are they calling Windows 6.2 as Eight again?
"she went on to say that 'power users' preferred maximising the ribbon bar."
No, that's not even bull shit - that's horse shit.
Power users want real estate for working, not some oversized tool bar cum menu bar atrocity. They use short cuts and/or hot keys and do not want huge, disorganized tool bars. If we *have* to have this damn thing, you can bet that it'll be collapsed, hidden, disabled... whatever it takes to get rid of it.
Another battle in Microsoft's war against screen real estate. Maybe it's easier to see more files in Windows 8 than 7 because Windows 7 has oversized margins around its file names and icons? I had to literally hack some DLL to fix the obnoxious inter-file name spacing in the detailed view of Explorer.
Some of us like to use our computers for more than -Pad type purposes.
After testing the new interface on the XBOX 360 and Windows Phone I cant wait to see the future. Windows OS is getting better and better.
Hope they take user feedback and have an off button for metro right out of the gate!
@Morely the IT Guy: true dat!
I have been wanting to commit suicide over it - right after torturing the inventor of such interface.
When you think that things are getting better at M$, they tend to f*ck up a few other things.
"According to Microsoft's data the vast majority of users did not change the size of the ribbon bar, with only six per cent minimising it if it was maximised.
Microsoft's data showed that 23 per cent of users would maximise the ribbon interface if it were minimised..."
And the other 71 percent would like to hunt down the designer of this travesty of an interface and torture him or her to death. Slowly.
