INNOCENT USERS of filesharing web site Megaupload will have their data kept safe for at least another two weeks.
Yesterday we reported that the data at the seized web site might be deleted by the end of the week. However, Megaupload's lawyer, Ira Rothken, has confirmed that the data will be kept safe for at least two weeks, according to Torrentfreak.
It reports that the authorities have made some backups of data for evidence but Megaupload wishes to secure all of its users' data.
Although the data has been temporarily saved from being erased, there is no way for users to retrieve any files. Many of these files are legitimate backups of family photos, videos and other personal data.
The firm's lawyers are arguing that letting hosting companies delete all user files will make it impossible to show that Megaupload is a legitimate organisation offering ordinary services.
If you visit the web site to attempt to get your files back you are simply greeted by an FBI notice saying that the domain name has been seized. The extra two weeks should give Megaupload and the authorities time to come up with a suitable solution.
While all this is going on founder of Megaupload, Kim Dotcom has lost his prestigious first place online player ranking in the world of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. µ

I hope I can get my data back. I have all my porn stored on there!
What if Microsoft thought up a new law, whereby they could have their competitors thrown in jail for operating, and have their assets liquidated, all while their competitor had not yet been to trial. They'd be geniuses.
