TAIWANESE PHONE MAKER HTC will cut its smartphone portfolio this year, after its poor results in the fourth quarter of last year.
According to Mobile Today, HTC will focus on delivering a few 'hero' devices in a bid to claw back market share.
HTC UK boss Phil Roberson said the company will focus on releases of high-end devices in the second quarter. He also said that the firm is pulling back in the tablet market, although not pulling out completely. He admitted, "We have to get back to focusing on what made us great - amazing hardware and a great customer experience. We ended 2011 with far more products than we started out with. We tried to do too much."
Earlier this month, we reported that HTC had announced its first ever decline in profits of nearly 26 per cent.
The firm released disappointing figures for the last quarter of 2011, with net income after tax of New Taiwan (NT) $11.02m. By comparison in the same quarter in 2010 it recorded net income of NT$14.8m, a drop of 25.5 per cent.
November was a particularly poor month for the company, which saw year-on-year revenue fall 19.6 per cent.
It was a busy year for the smartphone and tablet maker that saw it pump out scores of handsets and buy a majority stake in Beats Audio. That technology along with the branding is now found in most of its devices.
Perhaps the company has realised that quality over quantity is key.
We contacted HTC for further comment, but have not heard back at time of writing. µ

HTC can do much better if just starts selling Android ICS handsets without its sense interface. The earlier its brings the sets better chance of success it has got. But looks like how Sansung, LG and the Chinese Huawaei & ZTE are much better placed than it and Sony. Motorola(now owned by google) has also run out of innovative ideas.
It's stupid to release that many phones in one year. None of them are going to get proper support or bug fixes. Better to scale back to one or two phones a year and get it right than release a bunch of buggy, laggy, crapped out phones.
HTC rule. I let go of my Sensation for 1 week to try a Galaxy S2 and I was right back. The Android implementation on HTC is the best. Small things make it great. My Lumia died, and my iPhone was ok, but even my mum has an iPhone now. so for me only HTC will do. as above, quality not quantity will make HTC great (er)
Not really sure why the above comment states the obvious?
Android is not 'one' OS like iOS, it is an open source software stock with an SDK! Of course it comes in many shapes and forms that is the whole point of 'open source'...
Comparisons need to be made against:
Android vs iOS
HTC/Samsung vs iPhone
I hope HTC releases another Android Touch & Type device. HTC Desire Z is a very good slide-out qwerty phone, but its specs are outdated.
...in the first place.
Much better to maybe launch 3 new phones (low/mid/high) a year and concentrate on properly supporting and bug fixing them.
Rather than launch 12 new models and none of them get any attention afterwards because you are too busy launching another 4 models the next month.
all that was left is "HTC Dog's danglies"
Android really is different than Apple in that while the iPhone is one type of phone definitely, Android comes in many different types of devices. With Android, different brands like HTC and Samsung compete with in the platform for dominance.
