Android will become the OS of choice for developers

Role reversal
Mon Jan 23 2012, 14:55

INDUSTRY ANALYST FIRM Ovum predicts that Google's Android will overtake Apple's IOS in importance to developers.

In a turning of the tables, Android will become the operating system (OS) of choice for developers rather than IOS within 12 months, says Ovum. Its second annual developer survey points out that most developers support both operating systems, though.

Somewhat in line with IHS' recent figures predicting that Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 OS will overtake IOS in market share within three years, the Ovum study indicates growing interest in the colourfully tiled Microsoft OS, as well as the Blackberry OS.

Adam Leach, author of the research at Ovum said, "The growing momentum behind Windows Phone indicates that Microsoft has managed to convince developers that its platform is worthy of investment; its challenge now is to persuade consumers."

He noted that the changes "mirror closely" what is happening in the smartphone market as a whole, dropping essentially obsolete operating systems such as Symbian and WebOS.

The study also revealed that developers are moving away from traditional cross-platform methods such as Java and Flash. They are apparently jumping over to web-based HTML5 but still using straight forward ways of distribution like the Android Market.

Leach said, "A smartphone platform's success is dictated not only by the pull of consumers and the push of handset vendors and mobile operators but also by a healthy economy of applications delivered by third-party developers. Therefore, it is important for all players in the smartphone ecosystem to understand the choices developers are making today and the downstream impact of those choices." µ

Google's not nice to developers

Google is not nice to developers in certain parts of the world. I wanted to sell my app on Android market... I've paid the developer fee ($25/year), just to find that parts of Central and Eastern Europe are cut from the ability to sell apps (I can distribute only free apps, but this is not the point).

On contrary, Apple Inc. is allowing me to sell my apps on their platform (although via somewhat harder process). I used not to love Apple, I don't like the whole vendor lock-in things, but now I think Apple is the more mature company. Now my money would flow through Apple, and the Google is a big disappointment. Not to mention the fact that Google is going to compete against ALL other software industry very soon - talk about the choices.

Ever hear of HTML5

It's far more likely that developers will migrate to HTML5. One piece of code that runs on all devices - how unique, and maybe even profitable because you don't need to guess who is going to be king of the mountain this week. After all, Microsoft may come up with a winner in Windows 8 - it's happened before. RIM is down - but not out, at least not yet.

adam leach is a moron

"growing momentum of windows phone" = "I am an idiot"

What momentum is that Adam? That you read another study from another moron analyst who predicted WP to overtake IOS, based on nothing but rhetoric?

A month ago, MS itself was shuffling WP management to try to "gain momentum"... LOL.

Morons....adam LEACHing off society but contributing nothing except vacuous analysis for which they are not held accountable.

ANd yes...Nya called it...gee...android will be the choice due to having the larget market...INSIGHTFUL!!

Again?

It amazes me how Apple-haters hope so feverently for its demise that they're willing to believe ANYTHING from one of these "analysts" who have been predicting Apple's downfall for years and get it wrong EVERY TIME. Keep trying guys. Perhaps another 20-30 years and you can say "See? We told you!"

It should be!

It's the biggest mobile market share out there. It should be the choice for developers! Let alone the fact they don't have to suffer the stupid if you compete with Apple today or possibly in the future we'll remove you tat they have to face also.
