MPAA CEO calls for politicians to stay bought

The elephant never forgets
Mon Jan 23 2012, 10:15

FILM INDUSTRY MOUTHPIECE Chris Dodd showed the entertainment companies' flagrant disregard for democracy by claiming on camera that politicians who have received 'donations' from the entertainment industry should support the Protect IP Act (PIPA) and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

Dodd was speaking to that bastion of 'fair and balanced' journalism, Rupert Murdoch's Fox News, where he must have felt comfortable enough to say, "Those who count on quote 'Hollywood' for support need to understand that this industry is watching very carefully who's going to stand up for them when their job is at stake. Don't ask me to write a check for you when you think your job is at risk and then don't pay any attention to me when my job is at stake."

The audacity of Dodd's comment - on the record - should only reinforce the widely held belief that US politics has become nothing more than a snakepit of sponsored errand-runner jobs for people with no scruples.

The long running saga of the SOPA and PIPA legislation finally hit the mainstream news last week when several web sites including Wikipedia, Google and Reddit publicly demonstrated against the bills. Those against SOPA and PIPA claim that, should the bills become law, the government and Dodd's employers would be able to censor the internet to their liking.

Of course what Dodd said is pretty much an open secret, known to anyone who follows politics. However Dodd - a one-time US senator - must feel so secure in his position of having politicians in his pocket that he felt it was perfectly normal to air US politics' dirty practices in public.

Both SOPA and PIPA were pushed by the music and movie cartels in their zeal to increase their own profits. Perhaps if Dodd and his colleagues stopped paying off politicians with 'campaign contributions' that are nothing more than thinly veiled bribery, they could increase their bottom lines without having to curb free speech. µ

Let's be clear

@David

Piracy not in the context the MPAA use

However had the film makers in early 1900's faced the level of litigation and political lobbying we see today, Hollywood would likely not exist, a fact that Hollywood chose to ignore. Such is the inconvenience of history

The current issue is that Copyright and IP Law is being used to stifle competition and exclude innovation to maximise profits for the shareholders (not jobs as is often cited)

As the founders of Hollywood realised the only way to bypass Edison's MPPC IP was to find a location where they would be unlikely to uphold the IP, California was chosen because it offered a safe haven.

Hollywood founded by Copyright & IP thieves not pirates

Someon forgot to take their meds today

There appears to be lots of distorted views on copyright laws, the MPAA and worthless politicians.

Most people know right from wrong but some people simply don't have any scruples.

IMO about 99% of U.S. politicians...

...are scum. The other 1% we're still not sure about.

That however does not change the fact that copyright law exist for a reason and that infringement of said copyright is and shall remain to be a violation of law. SOPA and other poorly written attempts to curb unlawful use of copyright protected works needs to be better thought out and approved as legislation.

Duh

I certainly doubt if anyone - anyone at all - is surprised by the comments that came from former senator Chris Dodd. He was as corrupt as the come when he was in office, why would it surprise anyone that this characteristic hasn't changed since he left office?

The CORRUPT lame-stream media in the US typically gives a free pass to corruption if the politician is in the "correct" party. More than likely, had Dodd made these comments to CNN or MSNBC, they would have never seen the light of day. Just one more reason Fox News is mocked - for daring to air the dirt from any and all politicians. A good "news" organization would have realized that something like this was not newsworthy.

Hollywood Hypocrisy

An industry founded on IP & Copyright theft

Setup in California because they did not want to pay the copyright and IP fees to Edison's MPPC based on the East Coast. Los Angeles courts were unlikely to find for the plantiff (MPPC)

Copyright theft is theft as long as you are not Hollywood eh!!

Sign the petition!

Perhaps some good will come of it but then again he may be signing the investigator's pay checks?
