Fake Ipad 2 tablets are found in stores

Useless lump is made of clay
Thu Jan 19 2012, 11:09

SHODDY FAKE Ipad 2 tablets are turning up in Canadian stores.

Shoppers are buying, or shelf fillers are finding that what looks like a tablet computer of the Apple variety is actually a piece of clay of the earth variety.

According to CTV News Walmart, London Drugs and Best Buy all have found the fakes in stores and some are already investigating how they got there. We have asked all of them to confirm this and are waiting for responses.

Future Shop, a fourth firm, has already commented on the incidents and has published a blog post with its take on the situation.

It said that it had found that boxes had been unsealed at some point and had their Ipads replaced. However it does not know how.

"Recently, several instances of fraud concerning the iPad2 were reported to various store locations in BC. In these cases, the original iPad 2 product had been removed from the packaging, and replaced with a slab of clay, molded to the approximate size of the tablet. The packages were then re-sealed and returned," says the message.

"While there have been less than 10 instances of iPad2 fraud reported in the region, Future Shop is advising any affected customers to return to any store location for a complete refund or verified replacement."

The company said it takes fraud very seriously and has launched an investigation, along with Apple and "other retailers who have reported similar incidents".

It added that it has already implemented measures to ensure that products have not been tampered with. Whether those involve someone with a box cutter we can't say. µ

Ipad fanbois will love the clay, they can roll it out, cut it, shape and make all sort of fun shapes!

it will occupy all twelve of their braincells at the same time!

APPLE HATERS LOVE CLAY

AND THEY LOVE ANDREW "DICE" CLAY. BUTT, I CANNOT FIND THE DICEMAN ON FACEBOOK.
SAY, HOW MUCH FOR A CLAY IPAD? FOR REAL. IMAGINE YOUR FRIENDS LOOKS OF SHOCKED AMAZEMENT WHEN YOU BUTT OUT YOUR FAG RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF ITS FACE.

Change the Packaging is the fix

The best solution is to change the packaging to be transparent, so people can visually see what is the actual product in side without opening the package.

Opening package at purchase or returning do not work very well. No one want's to open the box when it's purchased for gift.

Opening at returning may help detects the fake product earlier, but again, how can the store identify the person returning the un-opened fake product is innocent or scammer. They still have to take in the clay.

My 2 cents

Bogus

For the vendors to claim that they were purchased, replaced with clay, and then returned.. put back on the shelves and resold is a crock. No way the cachier would not have checked the return before they issued the refund. Inside job. An employee replaced them, and then sold them on the street.

Ah, glad you clarified that.

"SHODDY FAKE Ipad 2 tablets are turning up in Canadian stores."

As opposed to shoddy real Ipad 2 tablets, of course.

Ok

Okay most of these users purchased these before christmas. Why did it take 3-4 weeks for them to realise it was a lump of clay and not a touch sensitive hand held computer?

60% of them were probably happy with their clay ipads until they realised it didn't have the apple logo on so they wouldn't get respect from their piers.

30% used them for a week and didn't know until they tried to get bragging rights by showing it to friends who promptly pointed out that it was a lump of clay.

10% are perfectly happy with their devices although its not as responsive as they would like.

Happened to me

It happened to me with an external drive. There was a piece of wood in the box instead of an external HD inclosure. Guess what, it was from Best Buy... Somebody in their supply line is getting rich.

Time lapse

I wonder how long it took the customers to realize it was clay... ( apple users, and all )
