Virgin Media suffers a major outage

Nationwide problems hit internet users
Wed Jan 18 2012, 10:53

UK PHONE, INTERNET AND TELEVISION PROVIDER Virgin Media had a major outage last night that saw users nationwide complaining about its services.

The INQUIRER suffered some downtime and was frustrated to find that when it tried to call Virgin Media's help line, a handy 150 from a Virgin line, it got nothing but an engaged signal. According to posts on Twitter many others were frustrated by the same problem.

"We are aware of a network issue affecting some customers' broadband service. Investigations are underway; we hope to have service back asap," said the company yesterday evening in a message on Twitter.

"Services are restored & stable for over an hour now. Engineers are on site monitoring. Thx for your patience, sorry for any inconvenience," it added two hours later.

A Virgin Media service status page suggests that there are still ongoing problems, or new problems, with ADSL services. A red button next to the ADSL broadband status signifies a "Serious fault or a service is down," according to the most recent update.

Virgin Media said that a routing issue is behind the problems, meaning that although it looked like the network was down, it was actually live. Only some users will have been affected, it added, and they will not have been able to access certain web sites.

"Some of customers may have experienced problems getting online for a while yesterday evening," said a spokesperson.

"Our engineers quickly fixed the problem and service was restored before 8pm. We apologise for the inconvenience." µ

Our Virgin broadband and TV was out from Tuesday until Sunday- Terrible customer service- none knew what was happening!
All info on website was wrong- not what we've come to expect from them.

Outage Information

I work for an ISP that uses a small amount of their network. It not only took out ADSL lines, but Major Leased Lines too, so i imagine this has cost them a lot of money. Goodbye free infrastructure upgrades!

DNS failure? Provisioning failure?

During the early stages of the outage DNS lookups failed but sites were accessible using raw IP addresses.

Later, my cable modem was reporting "Information (7) Network access is disabled by provisioning; no traffic will b..."

Even later I was told that their helpdesk was also knackered.
