Labour web advisor quits over Hitler parody

MP removes himself from role
Mon Jan 16 2012, 15:58

A LABOUR MP has quit his role as web advisor after he was found to have retweeted a Hitler parody video that parodies First Minister and Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Alex Salmond.

The video - it's the infamous one from the film Downfall - was used in this instance to ridicule Salmond. Although it shows that MP Tom Harris has a good eye for a meme, albeit a very old one, it also suggests that he might not always make decisions in the best of taste.

The video is called Joan's Downfall and is posted to the MPs Youtube account, and is still linked on his Twitter page. Also present are some defiant comments from him as he attempted to remind everyone that this was a parody and nothing more.

"Please, Angus. I know you too well for you to pretend you're offended by that video - you've actually got a sense of humour!" he said in response to another MP. "I'm not satirising Hitler (as well you know) - I'm satirising your party and leader."

According to the BBC he has removed himself from the web advisor role in the face of increasing criticisms, and will no longer lead the Labour party's social media review team.

"The video I posted has been a well worn joke used to parody a range of public figures," he said.

"However, context is everything and in the context of Johann's and my desire to improve the level of political debate on social media and the context of Joan McAlpine's much more serious statements about all political opponents of the SNP being anti-Scottish, my actions have been an unhelpful distraction for which I apologise... I have decided to step down from leading the party's social media review." µ

Learn to differentiate politicians, please

I'd never step down over a silly humor tweet if I was him, if alone because you don't want to encourage the insane trend of taking tweets quite that serious.

But anyway, if you ever take any job with some bearing make sure that they sign a damn paper that they agree that they will not take tweets you make serious, get it freaking notarized.

Anti-Scottish? Be serious.

You all live on an island smaller than the State of California. Anyone who seriously claims "anti-Scottish" sentiment is living in the Seventeenth Century, and ought to be locked up with Rupert Murdoch.

And anyone who claims to be offended by such is simply looking for an excuse to be offended.

Duh

Everyone knows this was not politically correct, and in this day and age of PC you cannot get away with it. He obviously had to step down.
