CHINESE PHONE MAKER Huawei has announced the world's thinnest smartphone at the consumer electronics show (CES) in Las Vegas.
The smartphone is called the Ascend P1 S and measures a wafer thin 6.68mm thick. The firm also announced a slightly chunkier device, at 7.69mm thick, alongside it called the Ascend P1.
"We're excited to unveil the world's slimmest smartphone here at CES 2012," said Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei Device. "The Ascend P1 S demonstrates our ongoing commitment to innovating high quality devices that utilise the latest hardware and software technologies."
This design beats that of Motorola's Razr, which is a still impressive 7.1mm thick. Huawei's pair of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphones will be powered by a Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 Cortex A9 1.5GHz dual-core processor.
Remaining specifications look attractive including a 4.3in qHD 540x960 Super AMOLED touchscreen with Gorilla Glass, an 8MP rear camera, a 1.3MP front camera and 4GB of internal storage.
The two handsets have different batteries with the Ascend P1 S getting an 1800mAh unit and its slightly thicker partner a 1670mAh version.
No prices for the smartphones have been released yet but Huawei said they should tip up in the UK early in the third quarter. µ
