CHIP DESIGNER AMD has appointed Rajan Naik as SVP and chief strategy officer.

Naik, who previously was a partner in McKinsey & Company's Technology practice, will report to AMD president and CEO Rory Read and will be responsible for AMD's short-and long-term strategy development, including market opportunities, strategic partnerships and investment strategies.

Naik was at McKinsey & Company for 11 years, where he provided counsel to various companies in the technology and telecom industries. Prior to McKinsey, Naik was a senior engineer at Intel, which no doubt helped him win this latest role. Before that, he was a member of the technical staff at Lucent Technologies.

Naik's appointment follows that of Dr Lisa Su as SVP and general manager of global business units as well as the appointment of Mark Papermaster as SVP and chief technology officer.

Read said, "Rajan Naik possesses a strong track record of execution in strategic planning, product and market strategy, and operational performance. He will help ensure strategic and operational alignment across our business to take advantage of growth opportunities in lower power, emerging markets and cloud computing." µ

Rajan's job will be tough

Working with far fewer resources will make Rajan's job far more difficult than when at Intel. He'll need to be able to literally produce miracles to not get canned in 12 months. There's always got to be a scapegoat for stockholders and it's not going to be the new CEO.
