Google Android Market reaches 400,000 active apps

Thanks to more publishers and free apps

MOBILE SOFTWARE HOUSE Google's Android Market has hit the 400,000 active apps mark.

The metric counts only active apps worldwide so it doesn't include apps that Google or the developers have removed. The data was published by Distimo, which compiles and analyses data about app stores.

The report also shows that the Android Market has more than 100,000 active publishers and reveals the split between free and paid for apps.

Distimo said, "The main contributors to reach this milestone are free applications. Roughly, [two-thirds] of the available applications are free in Android Market."

The number of free apps has risen steadily and increased to 68 per cent at the end of 2011 compared to 60 per cent in April 2011. Distimo puts this rise down to the freemium business model that sees an app offered for free but further content, such as more levels of a game, requiring payment.

Apps have seen a recent boom in downloads over the Christmas period with a reported one billion downloaded in a week.

Apple's App Store for the Iphone reached the same milestone in less months, 22 compared to 31. However, the Android Market moved between 200,000 and 300,000 and onto 400,000 apps in less time that its rival. This will be partly down to the fact that Apple has strict rules and an approval process before it allows apps to reach the store. µ

Need better statistics

400000

how many are any good is probably a bit hard to quantify (like much of the internet the 1% or 0.1% rule probably applies).

how many (of 32% paid ones) have sold more than a handful??

more than 1000 units ?

Free ones can be garbage and if still downloadable probably might get some downloads if the description at least sounds useful.

Thus need a graph of breakdown of how many units sold/downloaded across that
400000.

How many have been found to contain malware or worse ?? Im not sure how they vet them or how soon they get vetted and diseased ones are removed.
I wouldnt see google doing any such (past some basic checks that might be automated) until someone else reported a problem (or even that the given description has anything to do with the Apps function).

Liek so many other things, there might be 400000 movies out there but only a few might be all that good or of any interest.

The whole process may need improvements so that alot of people simply dont waste alot of time on garbage and dont wind up with something harmful.
