It's wafer thin too

SMILEY FACED FIRM LG has announced a 55in organic light emitting diode (OLED) TV.

At 55in the TV is set to be the world's largest OLED TV, according to LG, which has a current OLED TV that is just 15in. The firm will show off the large flat panel TV at next week's consumer electronics show (CES) in Las Vegas.

"Working closely with LG Display, we have a product which not only delivers on all the advantages of OLED over LCD but at a significantly lower cost than what could be achieved using existing OLED manufacturing technologies," said Havis Kwon, president and CEO of LG.

"OLED is clearly the future of home TV entertainment and LG is very focused on making this exciting technology as easy as possible for consumers to embrace."

Not only is the panel large, the TV is wafer thin at just 4mm and weighs only 7.5kg. LG said it will incorporate its four colour (red, green blue and white) pixels and Colour Refiner features to deliver natural and accurate colour.

"Such colour capabilities are technically impossible with LED and LCD display panels," said LG.

According to Bloomberg the TV will be 3D and web capable and might go on sale in the second half of this year. µ

Three colour broadcast...

would that really be a problem... I presume white is displayed in a three colour broadcast system by having all three colour illuminated? Could that not simply be used as a signal to use the "white" led rather than all three other colours?

four colour broadcast

surely as with sharps quad colour technology it wont really work as there are not television broadcasters broadcasting four colour signals.
