Chinese hackers break into US Chamber computer system

Steal six weeks of emails
Wed Dec 21 2011, 12:54

CHINESE HACKERS have broken into the US Chamber of Commerce computer systems and gained access to information about its three million members.

According to the Wall Street Journal, people familiar with the matter said that the hackers might have broken into the business lobbying group's network more than a year before they were discovered. The attack, which involved at least 300 email addresses, was cut off in May 2010 and quietly closed down, the paper said.

Apparently, US officials think that one of the people responsible for the hack was connected to the Chinese government. The hackers stole six weeks of emails belonging to four employees who focused on Asia policy.

The Chamber moved to shut down the operation by unplugging and destroying some computers and overhauling its security system.

The group timed the clamp down for a 36-hour period over one weekend when the hackers were expected to be off duty.

Chamber staff did not report any sign of harm to the group or its members. µ

""After all, they keep telling us citizens that if we have nothing to hide, we have nothing to fear, so let's see what the USCoC isn't afraid to hide.""

It is unfortunate that on average Americans (or citizens of ANY other country for that matter) don't have enough common sense to recognize that obvious hypocrisy.

Destroying Computers

I know they're angry... but a format, a bios upgrade, these things will work too. Sheesh. Perhaps they could burn the computers at the Stake. You know, to exorcise the demons otherwise they'll corrupt all the other computers?

Bosses checking up on employees, nothing to see here

Since Beijing is the primary financial supporter of the US Chamber of Commerce (doubt me? The USCoC is the single largest supporter of outsourcing in the USA), this is simply the Communist Government in Beijing checking up to see what their lobbyist employees have been doing.

And if what I say about their funding is wrong, all they have to do is provide the list of contributors and the amounts given. After all, they keep telling us citizens that if we have nothing to hide, we have nothing to fear, so let's see what the USCoC isn't afraid to hide.

Wonder if the got any of the email.

I would like to see the email addresses and emails if possible. It could help follow the money trail into the US Congress and the White House.

Who woulda guessed?

Does anyone expect the Chamber to admit that any harm is done by this action. I know we complain about the Chinese, but we need to take responsibility for our security. This is kinda like leaving the hen house door unlocked and blaming the weasel for your security issues.
