SOME CUSTOMERS of television services from Virgin Media appear to be getting a censored version of its TV guide that has a problem with things like Charles Dickens and the football club Arsenal.
The INQUIRER spotted the rather unusual touch of the censor while checking the Virgin Media television channels yesterday evening. Then, a glance at the schedules showed that one channel was showing a film called Hanc**k, which is a superhero movie starring Will Smith that is usually called Hancock and goes proudly by that name wherever it appears.
We searched for more incidents of such behaviour this morning, and found this blog, called themediablog, which reveals that the snip is quite a regular occurrence.
Other edits spotted by its users include Charles D**kens, who has survived for over a hundred years without offending anyone with his name, Alfred Hitchc**k, who has done so for decades, and Nevermind the Buzzc**ks, which is a TV show that never worries about offending anyone anyway.
We have asked Virgin Media about its apparently new censor, and their apparent over-zealousness, and are waiting a response. In the meantime we suggest that you keep your eyes peeled and let us know if you spot any other likely censorship c**kups.
Update
Virgin Media told us that a process had been at fault, rather than an individual and explained that the system has been fixed.
"Over the weekend a temporarily over-zealous profanity checker took offence at certain programme titles. The altered titles have been swiftly an*lysed and we're fixing any remaining glitches," said a spokesperson by email. µ
