MOBILE ANALYTICS FIRM Carrier IQ has been accused by two US Senators of failing to adequately answer questions about the data that it takes from mobile users.
According to Business Week, Minnesota Democrat Al Franken said he was "still very troubled by what's going on" after looking at information submitted this week by Carrier IQ and mobile operators including AT&T and Sprint Nextel.
He said in a statement, "It appears that Carrier IQ has been receiving the contents of a number of text messages - even though they had told the public that they did not."
He continued, "I'm also bothered by the software's ability to capture the contents of our online searches - even when users wish to encrypt them. So there are still many questions to be answered here and things that need to be fixed."
Andrew Coward, Carrier IQ VP of marketing responded in a statement yesterday, "We appreciate subcommittee chairman Franken's continued interest in protecting consumer privacy and look forward to our ongoing dialogue with the Senator to answer his additional questions."
Franken's office released letters yesterday from Carrier IQ, AT&T, Sprint and HTC.
Yesterday, we reported that US federal investigators are looking into allegations that Carrier IQ tracked users and sent details to mobile operators.
According to the Washington Post, executives at Carrier IQ traveled to Washington on Tuesday and met with officials of the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) as well as US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) officials.
Earlier this week, it emerged that the FBI has been using data gathered by Carrier IQ for law enforcement, according to documents obtained by a freedom of information (FOI) request.
However, according to Slashgear, the FBI is now saying that it has never even requested information from Carrier IQ in the past. FBI director Robert Mueller said in a video, "We have neither sought nor obtained any information from Carrier IQ in any one of our investigations."
Carrier IQ's tracker-ware has come under intense criticism since it was found to be tracking user habits without the users' knowledge.
In an interview with The INQUIRER, Carrier IQ VP of marketing Andrew Coward said the firm uses location information so mobile operators can target specific demographics when collecting data. It is not very hard to see how this information could be useful for law enforcement agencies. µ
But, you lot apparently are not....
News-FLASH!!: Al Franken is the democratically elected Senator for State of Minnesotas' Democrat Party.
I.e. Boy and Girls he's more aligned to say your Labor (or is it Nu-Labor?) Party, and not those pesky Tories / Republicans that you all seem to hate so much.
Oh how I long for the Days of prosparity we had back when Lady Thatcher (by your own arguments a ~Bleeding Heart Liberal!~), and Sir Ronald Regan were running this show and not some Homie named Hussein that other git Blair or worse still Brown or the do-nothing cause he has no mandate Cameron. Granted hes not really responsible for this mess but still, I suppose that you wouldn't call him a Bleeding Heart Liberal either.
So you just might want to pay google or even Wiki a glance before making yourselves look the fools that you undoubtedly are
Good Day
Signd a ticked off Tea-Party Right-Winger 'Merikan
It's very clear most everybody in this CarrierIQ case is lying and deliberately obfuscating as well as attempting to pass the buck, and it's just a question if they allow them to do it.
Amd they aren't doing a good job at bullshitting since they keep saying things that show that what they said earlier doesn't fit what they claim shortly later, both carrieriq as well as the FBI.
Hucklebuck is not even an American. Any American understands Al Franken (to his credit) is one of the biggest liberal Democrats in Congress. Freedom of speech still exists, it's what allows Hucklebuck to show his stupidity to the ENTIRE WORLD.
"he knows that the FBI having this data makes everyone safer"
um...really?
cant tell if trolling or just stupid
Sen Al Franken is right-wing extremist whose only goal is to achieve power and raise hysterical issues like this. He knows that the FBI having this data makes everyone safer, and that by political grandstanding that he can try to come across as a defender of this so-called "freedom" that simply does NOT exist.
The Democratic party was supposed to drag Neanderthal conservatives like Al Franken into the 21st century.
