Google is readying a Siri rival called Majel

Star Trek interaction is on its way
Thu Dec 15 2011, 12:29

TECHNOLOGY GIANT Google is apparently working on a Siri rival that is called Majel and could be released this year.

The voice recognition software has been named after Majel Barrett-Roddenberry who voiced the computer in Star Trek. There isn't much of 2011 left but it could be released before the year is up.

Majel will aim to be better than Apple's Siri, which was introduced with the Iphone 4S smartphone. It will enable users to perform tasks and interact with the device in natural language like Siri, according to Androidandme.

The web site quotes a Google employee named Ted, who said, "It's definitely as good, or better, than Siri. At least on the tablet you can sort through different answers with these swipe-able trays. Like, if you say 'show me the Statue of Liberty' it'll automatically take you to Google Image results, but another tray beneath it might be its location on Google Maps and then another tray might have a Wikipedia page."

"It's also pretty good at giving you succinct answers if you ask it a question. The UI is definitely more powerful than Siri's, even if a little harder to navigate."

The most interesting element is the location based functionality which Siri is lacking in the UK.

A second anonymous Google employee said, "Speech recognition is somewhat better than what you would get with normal speech input, mostly because of the use of high quality microphones and lip-reading assistance."

"I have had the chance to interact with the robot personally and it is honestly the most amazing thing that I have ever seen. I like to think of it like Stephen Hawking because it is extremely smart and you can interact with it naturally, but it is incapable of physically doing much. There is a planned phase two for development of an advanced robotics platform."

We've contacted Google for its side of the story but have heard nothing back yet. Google is clearly working on bettering Siri but whether Star Trek style software will appear is unclear. µ

Re: Google copying

Because having voice recognition before aPple is no excuse.

@richard,

"...mp3 players, phones, laptops, pads..."
Please note that none of these were "innovated" by aPple. Taking someone else's invention and dumbing it down while adding "style" is not an innovation.

Cant Google come up with it's own innovations? Their OS is a copy of iOS, and now they are copying Siri. One reason that I will never buy or use Google products :(

"Working…"

In this case, I believe Google is "copying" the vaguest idea of what Siri is, at most, the underlying tech quite possibly being vastly different. Siri is an AI application, while Google seems to base its tech in datamining. How well it works should be interesting.

Also, Siri wasn't Apple's. It bought the product.

The "Majel" thing is nice (and a bit creepy)

Hahaha

Google is not only a total shameless copycat for absolutely everything - it's their business model to be a predator. As usually m#rons do not care as soon as 10% or more discount is there

apple is still the one revolutionizing

Doh,

You may well be right that all corps. are equally guilty of various distasteful behavior (though I can't think of one who has weighed down an entire industry...or our futures as much as MS over the last few decades (bear in mind, I've never owned a Mac in my life))

However, regardless of where an idea originated, whether with a lab, a researcher, an early failed product, there is no doubt that Apple has been the one bringing game-changing, successful products to the marketplace, and that, indeed, in the areas of mp3 players, phones, laptops, pads...it's been the rest of the companies struggling to copy and emulate....OVERALL.

What?

@The American Communist

Hmm let's forget about Mr Job's famous comment about 'Artists copy, great artists steal!' or that when Job's complained that Mr Gates had copied the Windows idea from Apple to whit Mr Gate metaphorically pointed out that when M$ broke into the rich neighbours house to steal the TV they found that A$ had been there first.

Frankly all these corporations are as bad as each other, just a case of which one's Ali Barbar?

@ Icup

I just asked SIRI on my iPhone 4S "Is Icup a pillock". After a few moments SIRI said "No, Icup is a complete Pillock".

There you go!

What planet are you on Icup? Apple copies Google!!!!! Do you have your own personal 'reality distortion field'?

Dear Icup, Apple is a second rate company. Second only to Exxon and above ALL else. Wise up Man!

Live long and Prosper.

Google steals more ideas from Apple. They MUST be taking the pith.

Hey INQ, now you can't call Apple and its cultists Jobs Mob, here are a few alternatives from moi.

Cooks Crooks (I like that one) or Cooks Fooks.

Even being a dedicated Macolyte since 1990, I can still have a good laugh.

And to you snarling anti-apple brigade - For heaven's sake, get a life you sad little virgins. You need a Mommy.
