CHIPMAKER Intel is creating a mobile and communications unit by combining four divisions as it looks to gain traction in smartphones and tablets.

According to Reuters, the new division combines the chipmaker's netbook and tablets division, ultra mobility division, mobile communications division and mobile wireless division.

A spokesman told Reuters that the ultimate goal is "to speed up and improve the development process".

The new division will be headed by Mike Bell, who moved to Intel last year from Apple, and Hermann Eul, a former Infineon executive.

Eul previously headed Intel's mobile communications division, including the mobile technology business it bought from Infineon in January.

Early next year manufacturers are expected to start to launch smartphones using the new Intel mobile chip, codenamed Medfield.

We have contacted Intel for comment about its new division but haven't heard back from it yet. µ
