UK student pleads guilty to hacking Facebook

Defence says he was trying to expose vulnerabilities

A YORK STUDENT has pleaded guilty to hacking into Facebook earlier this year.

According the Telegraph, prosecutors said the hack was the "most effective and egregious example of hacking into social media that has come before a British court".

Student Glenn Steven Mangham, 26, admitted breaching the security of the social network between April and May this year.

The jury at Southwark Crown Court was told that Mangham, who is a software development student, had caused alarm over potential industrial espionage among American authorities, including the FBI.

He hacked into Facebook's systems and downloaded "highly sensitive intellectual property", said prosecutor Sandip Patel.

However, Mangham's defence attorney said he was trying to discover vulnerabilities so Facebook could strengthen its security.

Mangham was arrested by specialist investigators from the Metropolitan Police Central e-Crime Unit in early June after Facebook found a trail he thought he had deleted.

He had previously been rewarded by Yahoo for discovering vulnerabilities in its systems.

The young man will be sentenced on 17 February. µ

What the hell does facebook have that is so incredibly sensitive and precious? They weren't 1/10th as concerned when it became known murdoch's hacks listened in on the PM's phone. And there he could actually expect some privacy, unlike facebook.
