FRUIT THEMED Apple has announced that in less that a year 100 million applications have been downloaded from the Mac App Store.
It is a big number no doubt, and it is a mix of paid for and free applications. The success follows that seen in Apple's other app stores, like those for the Iphone and Ipad and Itunes, its music download service.
"In just three years the App Store changed how people get mobile apps, and now the Mac App Store is changing the traditional PC software industry. With more than 100 million downloads in less than a year, the Mac App Store is the largest and fastest growing PC software store in the world," said Philip Schiller, Apple's SVP of worldwide marketing.
The cappuccino company has also provided us with comments from other firms that are equally excited about how well the Mac App store is going for them. These are a mix of gushing praise and thanks to Apple for bringing their wares to a new, much larger market.
Mac developers set the prices for their apps and keep 70 per cent of the sales revenue, added Apple, seeming to imply that merely 70 per cent is somehow a good realisation for its developers. The firm launched the store in January 2011 along with its Snow Leopard Mac OS X operating system release.
Apple also released some other statistics about its IOS app store, including that is offers over 500,000 apps and has seen 18 billion apps downloaded, one billion per month, through its virtual doors.
Last week Google announced that ten billion apps had been downloaded from its Android store. µ
