Adobe reveals an Acrobat and Reader vulnerability affecting Windows, Mac OS X and Linux

SOFTWARE OUTFIT Adobe has revealed a critical security vulnerability in its Acrobat and Reader applications for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Adobe's popular Reader and Acrobat applications used to view PDF files have a U3D memory corruption vulnerability that could result in a system crash and worse still, allow the attacker to take control of the system. The firm said targeted attacks have been reported and can be mitigated by using Adobe Reader X protected mode and protected view.

Adobe said it will address the issue and issue a fix for Windows versions of Acrobat 9 and Reader 9 next week. Linux users will have to wait until 10 January 2012 for their fix.

Since the firm believes the protected modes in Reader X and Acrobat X sufficiently protect users against the vulnerability, the firm will make a fix available for those versions on 10 January 2012, at which time all affected Macintosh versions of Reader and Acrobat will also be patched.

Adobe recommends those that can use Acrobat and Reader X check whether Protected View or Protected Mode is running, respectively, through the preferences menu.

According to Adobe the only operating system not affected by this critical vulnerability is Google's Android. µ

Surely the damn reader doesn't run with superuser privileges, so even though it might get some limited access it should be contained right?

So maxs and linux should still be better off than some others.

Linux users are fine..

.. Just as long as you don't use adobe reader...

Most people won't use it anyway as the kde/gnome pdf readers are usually far quicker, less resource heavy and MORE SECURE

Only a moron would install adobe reader in Linux...
