Shows off a working model

FRENCH TABLET MAKER Archos has previewed Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) on its G9 tablets, confirming that they will get an upgrade to the latest Android edition.

Archos G9 owners will be getting the upgrade to ICS in the first quarter of next year. This will come as good news after the G9 series of tablets launched in different variations due to delays to the Texas Instruments OMAP4 processor.

ARMdevices said, "Archos is showing a preview of Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich running on the OMAP4 based Archos G9 tablets to be finalized during Q1 of 2012."

"They still have to finish the hardware acceleration for video support, Samba/Upnp, 3G stick support and all of the other specific features that Archos provides on top of Android."

This confirmation is only one of a few for tablets we've heard about so far. The only other tablet devices that we know will get the update are the Motorola Xoom family and the Asus Transformer Prime.

The video demonstration shows ICS running pretty smoothly on the tablet, although not many features are shown off. If Archos manages to get the upgrade sorted for the first quarter of 2012 its G9 tablets could be among the first to get bumped up to Android ICS. µ
