Iphones are banned in Syria

Reports suggest a blanket ban on gadgets
Mon Dec 05 2011, 09:50

VARIOUS NEWSPAPERS are reporting that the Syrian government has issued a blanket ban on Apple's Iphone hardware to stop people from uploading videos of unrest.

A statement attributed to the local Customs Department of the Syrian Finance Ministry warns residents against using the phone, but does not specify what might happen if they are caught.

"The authorities warn anyone against using the iphone in Syria," reads the statement attributed to the government and seen by newspapers including Haaretz.com. According to the BBC, imports of the handsets have been banned too, as the government looks to quell unrest and any images of it.

The Daily Mail reminds us that Syria is the home of Steve Jobs' ancestry, and suggested that this will annoy Jobs' estranged father, Abdulfattah John Jandali, who is a native Syrian. µ

The story isn't the iPhone

I don't think the story here is the iPhone, I think it's appauling that there are still places like this, where the oppression of a countries citizens is so blatent that the government doesn't even try to hide it.

Clueless

But im still glad that they focused the ban on the iphone, it just shows how clueless they are of other phones that have the same ability to capture HD video and upload HD video to the internet.
