Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 finally overtakes Chrome and Firefox on Windows 7

Thanks to Windows Update

SOFTWARE REDEVELOPER Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) web browser has finally overtaken Mozilla's Firefox and Google's Chrome on Windows 7, Microsoft claims.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 was the firm's first web browser in years that actually had something going for it, and is widely acknowledged as having improved standards compliance and performance. However even with a persuasive brand, only now has IE9 overtaken its open source rivals Firefox and Chrome on Windows 7.

Citing Net Applications' figures, Microsoft's said its latest web browser has just edged above Google Chrome to take top spot among what Microsoft terms 'modern browsers' on Windows 7. While Internet Explorer 9 has surpassed its contemporary rivals, Microsoft concedes that Internet Explorer 8 is still the most popular web browser among Windows 7 users.

Last month it was a different story, with Mozilla's Firefox holding top spot, falling dramatically from first to third spot in just one month. Statcounter's latest figures also echo Net Applications' figures of Firefox's decline, with the analyst firm claiming that Google's Chrome has overtaken Firefox.

Microsoft is working to build up interest for Internet Explorer 10 (IE10), which it expects to release with Windows 8. At present IE10 is in developer preview status and is available only to those who download the Windows 8 beta.

Microsoft will be pleased that even without the help of preinstalling IE9 on Windows 7, IE9 still has managed to overtake Chrome and Firefox with the help of Windows Update and its web site. µ

@The HavoX: casual user?

Never had a problem with Firefox? You must not use it very much then. Memory leaks, slowdowns and stuttering, ridiculous need to be installed and updated as *the* Administrator, etc.

What has kept me on Firefox is, and only is, the extensions capability that is sorely lacking in the other browsers.

Think!!

um, what do you mean, *finally* overtaken????

look at the graph on this inq article..

IE has *always* been highest, due to the millions of noobs using it on their 'still factory settings' PC..

fall from grace

Ft lost momentum at version 3. Late updates. Not being on forefront on incorporating win 7 features. Heck they never took advantage of Aero glass on vista. Performance was stagnant. And the ostrich stand they took when Google released chrome was inexcusable. Its now Google and Microsoft all over again.

Once a Firefox user, ALWAYS a Firefox user.

I have had zero problems with Firefox since day one. If it causes crashes it means you have a serious problem with your system that should be resolved.

Ditto

Ditched Firefox and Chrome for Exploder. With Firefox not updates so much as crashes, lockups and display errors.

With Chrome its the low base functionality without even the usefulness of the Google toolbar, with the retentive micro of add ons. Google is playing a low game by discontinuing toolbar support in other browsers, what kind of departmental politics is behind that? If you stop doing good for evil reasons isnt that the same as doing evil?

FireFox fall from ggrace

One reason not mentioned so far is the dramatic move by FireFox to update at a furious rate. I for one now look for an alternative. My Symantic antivirus no longer works with fox.
The constant changes for the sake of change is a wonder to me.
Perhaps others are like me in the move away for what was once a fine browser.
Shades of NetFlicks, what arrogance!
