THE SOCIAL NETWORK Facebook has announced a higher upper limit for postings of a rather precise 63,206 characters.
The new limit on Facebook posts is significantly higher than the previous cap of 5,000 characters. As yet there has been no word about why Facebook made this change to its web site.
Facebook said, "You can now write posts with more than 60,000 characters, including status, group, and wall posts."
Wind back to September of this year and the limit was a pretty big 5,000 and go back further to July and the limit was a comparatively tiny 500 characters. To get an idea of how large a post you can now make, a typical novel can be posted in about nine separate posts.
Bob Baldwin, a software engineer at Facebook said, "I set the exact limit to something nerdy. Facebook ... Face Boo K ... hex(FACE) - K ... 64206 - 1000 = 63206 :-)".
We would have gone with x10000-1 or xFFFF or 65,535 ourselves, here at The INQUIRER, but that's just us.
Anyway, now everyone on Facebook can enjoy posting ridiculously long messages, save postage on annual Christmas card letters to family and friends, or write long and probably boring essays about how they're feeling each day. µ
