A SELLER ON EBAY has drawn prison time for attempting to evade almost half a million quid in taxes.
According to a statement put out by Her Majesty's Revenues and Customs (HMRC), Gregory Allnutt, 40, from south east London has been sentenced to 20 months imprisonment following an investigation that found he had evaded paying taxes to the tune of £430,000 while selling electronics through the online auction web site Ebay.
"Allnutt thought that by trading online he could avoid paying his taxes, but he has discovered that isn't the case. Our successful investigation and today's sentencing send a clear message to others involved in such crime that our investigators will identify and pursue you," said Chris Martin, HMRC's assistant director of criminal investigations.
"Tax fraud costs millions of pounds in lost revenue in the UK each year, money that could be used to fund vital public services."
When his home was raided in June, Allnut was found to have been carrying out tax fraud since 2007 by using a VAT registration number to obtain zero rated goods from suppliers in the European Union and then selling them on without declaring the transactions to HMRC.
Allnutt pleaded guilty to 12 counts of fraud on 1 November and was sentenced today. µ

I propose that any of the BBC Sports Personality contenders that don't pay any tax in the UK should be struck off as not being very British at all...

"money that could be used to fund vital public services."
Yeah like wars and arming cops with rubber bullets to use against students and people that protest summary executions by cops, vital services.
Well well well
HMRC, why don't you do the same with Sir Philip Green of Arcadia who has been dodging taxes?
And when are you going to ensure Vodafone pay their taxes?
Most of the goods sold in fairs and auctions come without any receipt and any tax or vat paid. Every trasaction online gets logged so very difficult to run away.
Instead of jailing the guy all the assets he and his family created from crime should have been seized or he asked to work out a deal with tax office like big companies do when they get caught stealing tax. He will only go back to a very good life once he comes out of prison. He must have taken a calculated risk and is paying the price for it.
