Interest in Windows 8 tablets has plummeted

Microsoft has taken too long, says Forrester Research
Wed Nov 30 2011, 16:05

INTEREST is waning for tablets running Microsoft's Windows 8 before they have even arrived, according to analyst Forrester Research.

While Forrester "is bullish on Windows 8 as a product for consumers", the firm said in a report that it "is going to be very late to the party".

The company said that, rather than being a "fast follower", Windows 8 is at best a fifth-mover after the Ipad, Android tablets, HP's now-defunct WebOS tablet and the Blackberry Playbook tablet.

Forrester also pointed out, "Apple, Samsung, and others have already launched second-generation products and will likely be into their third generation by the time Windows 8 launches."

The firm added that "newer competitors like Amazon (Kindle Fire) and Barnes & Noble (Nook Tablet) are reshaping consumer expectations in the market, driving down price points (and concomitant price expectations), and redefining what a tablet is".

Forrester said that in the first quarter of 2011 Windows was "by far" the top choice for US consumers, with 46 per cent saying they wanted one despite the fact that no touchscreen Windows tablets existed. However, by the third quarter of 2011 Windows was no longer number one in choice preference and interest among consumers dropped to 25 per cent.

Forrester's JP Gownder said, "These market dynamics are rapidly altering consumers' attitudes and needs. Most significantly, consumers' interest in Windows tablets is plummeting. Microsoft has missed the peak of consumer desire for a product they haven't yet released."

The firm said Microsoft's product strategists should take a lesson from Amazon's product strategists, who "fundamentally changed the tablet product experience by leading with content and services rather than feeds and speeds, at a compelling price point". µ

@Fteo

I'm sorry, but have you been living under a rock for the past year?

Irrespectively of Win8 actual merits or lack of thereof, one fact about it is known for sure -- it runs on ARM.

PLUS

When you buy an android product you are getting the os for free. If you buy a windows 8 product you can tack on probably another $100 for the os.

@Dilly Heiro

Android is far worse than Windows for alienating legacy hardware, even Google's own Nexus One doesn't support Ice Cream Sandwich!

Tablets and X86 do not mix!

The tablet market has been won by ARM already if people did not realize it. This comes with the pervasive internet connectivity by either wifi or cellular-radio. Any bulky Win8 tablet will be more of the same as before and doomed for failure. The ARM tablets are almost as capable but has all the advantages of slim/light/long battery and choice of form-factor all for reasonably low prices. How can X86 machines compete ?.

Duh

When all these FOOLS realize that the Micr0$uck$ LoseDoze Fone8 Operating System (O/S) will allow tablets to install the internet, browse the web, point and click, cut and paste, and multitask, and do all of the things that are so DIFFICULT if not outright IMPOSSIBLE to do on tablets now, EVERYONE will want it.

Windows 8 will end Intel's X86 monopoly

Windows 8 is good for consumers because of it several companies are developing powerful ARM multicore chips which can be used in servers and desktops in addition of tablets and handhelds.No one was going to design or manufacture these chips for linux but once they are out there, everyone can benefit.

It will lead to greater innovation and competition between ARM and its licences and Intel. Intel will be forced to reduce the price of their CULV processors used in tablets, laptops etc and will bring down the cost of CPUs, handhelds and computers

Windows Bloat

Microsoft and Intel have been screwing customers for decades with their business model:
- Windows licensed only for the PC you buy it on
- Each successive version of Windows needs more memory and processing power
- Hence, buy new hardware to run the new Windows

This has led to a so-called operating system that needs tons of memory and tons of processing power, both of which cost significant dough and electrical power to run.

Contrast with the leaner, meaner Linux variants such and Android and you have Windows that cannot possibly be any good on ARM-based devices.

Chickens home to roost :-))
