CHIP DESIGNER AMD has launched a line of branded memory modules, believing US computer enthusiasts need help to match their AMD processors with the right memory sticks.
AMD's last attempt at making it big in the memory business was the not so successful Spansion flash memory venture, but this time the company is doing little more than applying stickers and qualification testing to memory modules made by Patriot and Visontek. According to AMD, its memory brand will "help take the guesswork out of DRAM selection" for American punters.
The details of AMD's memory modules were reported months back and the firm's latest announcement held few surprises. The modules come in 2GB, 4GB and 8GB capacities and their speeds will be binned depending on three vague categories or use cases. In the 'entertainment' category the modules will be either DDR3 1333MHz or 1600MHz, while the 'performance' version will be available at 1600MHz and the 'Radeon Edition' RAM will be clocked at a blazing 1866MHz.
AMD claims that the memory sticks will be "tested and certified for specific AMD platforms to enable maximum performance at competitive pricing". Of course, just because AMD says 'maximum performance' will be attained doesn't make it fact, and other memory vendors such as Crucial also guarantee modules to work with specific motherboards.
While AMD's intention of making RAM selection easier is welcome, there have been few in the way of performance problems due to using non-AMD blessed memory modules in the past. In fact the recent overclocking world records using AMD's Bulldozer FX chips were set using memory modules sourced from Corsair, not Patriot or Visontek.
At present AMD's branded memory modules are going on sale in the US, but the firm did list one UK distributor, though it did not provide any pricing. µ
