Web site blocking is futile, say INQUIRER readers

The MAFIAA can’t censor the internet, says latest poll

WEB SITE blocking is futile and the MAFIAA can't censor the internet, according to INQUIRER readers.

BT, Virgin Media, Sky and TalkTalk have been ordered to block Newzbin2. For our latest poll, we asked, "What would you do if your ISP had to block a web site like Newzbin2?"

It seems The INQUIRER's readers wouldn't let something as small as a blocked web site prevent them from accessing content. Most of you pointed out that the MAFIAA can try, but won't ever be able to censor the worldwide web, with 59 per cent saying they would "Laugh at the futility of the MAFIAA trying to censor the Internet".

Meanwhile, some of you said you would go as far as changing your service provider if a web site like Newzbin2 was blocked, as 15 per cent of you said you would "Get another ISP".

Another 14 per cent of you wouldn't be deterred by blocking one web site and said you would "Find another web site that does the same thing".

As we've discussed before, blocking web sites is not likely to be effective, and many would solve the issue by using an intermediary to remain anonymous. This lead 10 per cent of you to pick the answer "Who cares? I'd use a proxy instead".

And it's hardly worth mentioning, but a meagre 2 per cent of readers would allow a web site block to affect their web surfing, saying they would "Stop visiting these web sites, I promise". We think this 2 per cent might have answered in jest.

Hopefully the ISPs will take note that web site blocking won't stop internet users from accessing copyrighted content. We will have to hope that UK government mandarins set to enforce the Digital Economy Act, which is coming into effect next year, will also be taking that into account. µ

So judging by the responses here...

.... I reckon I was right.

Nothing to lose any sleep over.

The world keeps on turning.

Newzbin2 is just one of many that has been blocked in various western countries.

More info for Jason

Newzbin2 is a site that provides access to data published on Usenet newsgroups. It seems quite odd to me that someone who's been "using the internet since 1993" would not know what that is, but never mind; you may be among the select group (centered around the age of 15 or 16) who think that the Internet consists entirely of Web sites, and that the purpose of Web sites is to sell porn.

Or you may be an astroturfer paid by the MPA to spread FUD.

Or you may simply be totally ignorant, and unable to use Google.

I present a number of options, so you may choose the one that appeals to you the most.

The Google search term you want is, "unblock Newzbin 2 in UK" (including quotes).

You're welcome.

@jason: Could be, could be..

Or it could be a large group of adults becoming increasingly irritated by their inability to buy content and watch it where they want.

I understand that such an argument might be hard for you to grasp as you seem to have the open mindedness of a American teenager.

Ermmmm.....

...whats Newzbin2?

I've been using the internet since 1993 and I haven't clue what it is or what it does.

So I guess 99.999% of internet users wouldn't care if it was blocked anyway.

Is this another case of a small group of self-entitled freetards with a mental age of 14-15 complaining again?
