SOFTWARE DEVELOPER Microsoft could find its chairman Bill Gates facing pointed questions from Novell over its alleged anti-competitive acts against the Wordperfect word processor.
Attachmate, which acquired Novell earlier this year, has continued the lawsuit against Microsoft claiming the Redmond company undermined its Wordperfect and Quattro Pro applications, a claim Microsoft has denied. Microsoft has called Gates to testify in the firm's defence, meaning that Novell's legal team could also get a crack at Gates.
Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s Novell's Wordperfect was the dominant word processor. But by the end of the decade Microsoft's Word had become the market leader, with Novell claiming in its lawsuit that Microsoft had sabotaged its efforts to produce a version of Wordperfect for Windows 95.
In court filings Novell said, "Microsoft engaged in a series of anticompetitive activities, including integrating other Microsoft software products, such as its browser technologies, into Microsoft's Windows operating system in an exclusionary manner, and entering into exclusionary agreements precluding companies."
Gates has previously given evidence in antitrust hearings against Microsoft. Back in 1998, Gates had to answer similar allegations made by the US government regarding the Netscape web browser.
The US government lawsuit served as encouragement for Novell's legal battle against Microsoft. Attachmate claims Novell's value dropped from $1.2bn in May 1994 to $170m in 1996 and is claiming three times its losses from Microsoft.
Gates is expected to begin his testimony today. µ

Hey bigga looney-dite, you are so right! Capitalism is SO evil. The USA needs a system like Cuba, China, or any of those hugely successful EU countries have. Socialism is so much better, that way nobody can get rich like ol' Slick Willy Gates did.
It is certainly much better if NOBODY has any wealth than for those greedy capitalists to hoard all that money. And for them to expect everyone to have to get a job a job and EARN a living - that is simply hate speech.
Let me see if I understand the logic...
Bill Gates/Microsucks has been convicted on three continents for violations of anti-trust law and the EU was the only authority with the integrity to fine them a token fine. In fact Microsucks market dominance was originally illegally established with Windows via violations of anti-trust laws.
So when Gates steals hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars from consumers every year and then gives a few hundred million of MY dollars and that of other people who he's raped... to some charity, that makes him a humanitarian?
REALLY? So then I guess that makes the mafia and drug lords humanitarians too? I always thought according to law these people were properly called criminals. Who knew?
No wonder the world is so FUBAR'ed... You can lead a person to knowledge but you can't make them think.
Bill Gates does a lot of good with the money. Not that it excuses anti-competitive behavior, but it's just ignorant to not recognize all the good he has done. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_%26_Melinda_Gates_Foundation
Linux and games...
Games are primarily developed for xbox and playstation or other specific devices, because it's easy. Everybody has the same hardware, same game controllers, etc so you can build a consistent experience.
People often support windows because there's a lot of windows computers and most games are developed using tools that run in windows.
This has nothing to do with Linux or Windows or Mac OS being superior. It's market share and hardware capabilities. Mac OS has more market share than Linux, but most mac's have very limited graphics options and no upgradability. And game controllers on the computers are not standardized at all. Added that mac's can run windows and games generally run better on mac's when run in windows... why bother. And linux machines can run windows (for the most part), so again, if the customer really wants to play your game, they could. If you bought windows xp back when it first came out, you could still run almost everything since, a decade later. That's like $1/month.
Android does well because it's a common platform, with market share, with a consistent controller (fingers). Makes no difference that it's based on linux. IOS isn't and it has lots of games too, for the same reasons. stable platform + market share + consistent controller.
Linux does support games its just that Game developers wont support linux!
Linux not user friendly?
Have you ever used ubuntu or suse?
How about android on phones and the games for android?
Stop talking about things you dont know!
Wonder where are the trolls now at?
MS is evil & engages in anticompetitive behavior...so why don't we all use Linux?
No we cannot coz it's not as user-friendly & has no support for games.
Same scenario applies too AMD v/s Intel...the trolls go...Intel is evil so I only buy AMD even if they sell me a 5 yr old PoS architechture...blah blah.
Point is - You buy/get what suits your needs...it doesn't matter if you run Windows or Linux or AMD or Intel...is what makes you happy/ is productive in that period.
So please trolls like SuperXP (pro AMD) from fudzilla & other guy posting in different names (pro Intel) just go away we don't wanna hear your shit or lousy comments.
Even if 10 of us go buy AMD crap or evil Intel shit it wouldn't make any difference to them...so stop posting your garbage & start posting something informative in the comments section
Gates is a fraud, a clever enough fellow at porting BASIC and CPM perhaps, but has never done anything to justify how much money he's gotten.
I've mentioned this figure before, and some idiot was unable to believe it:
Taking a ball-park figure of Gates got $55 billion (you can quibble on the exact figure but it's still HUGE: we know that he put 30 billion in the tax shelter that's called a "charitable trust"); anyway, even averaged over EVERY DAY of his life, Gates gets $2,700,000!
Yes, folks, that's right. EVERY DAY Gates gets more than you'll EARN in a lifetime.
That's the basic EVIL of capitalism: rewards the greedy few, not workers. Many people have done and still do daily vastly more for less. Society should and can easily get all of Gate's invention for far less by taxing the hell out of such ridiculous incomes.
