Mario’s fur habit is criticised by PETA

If he wears fur, then everyone else will

OCCASIONAL PLUMBER AND PART-TIME PRINCESS RESCUER Mario has fallen afoul of animal rights activists at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) because he occasionally takes on some fur.

Mario, in case you do not know, is a fictional game character who can be found at various times to be consuming mushrooms, growing in size, killing turtles and wearing what looks like a pelt. It's not a pelt of course, it's a representation that he has taken on some powers that amongst other things make him turn into a statue.

mario-peta-suitStill, that is enough to annoy PETA and the organisation is looking to make a villain out of the cartoonish hero. "Tanooki may be just a 'suit' in Mario games, but in real life, tanuki are raccoon dogs who are skinned alive for their fur," it says on a new web page designed to raise awareness about its campaign.

"By wearing Tanooki, Mario is sending the message that it's OK to wear fur. We created our game to help inform people that in real life, Mario would be wearing the skin of an animal who was beaten, strangled or electrocuted, and it wouldn't give him any special powers other than the power of self-deception."

To highlights its campaign PETA has created a scrolling platform game that probably did not need to exist, and is offering people the chance to watch a gruesome video about animal mistreatment. Although raising awareness of such cruelty is important, perhaps Mario was not the best choice as a target.

The Tanuki suit first appeared in Super Mario 3 and can be worn by either Mario or Luigi. Having been around for almost two decades it's a bit odd that it has just appeared on PETA's radar. Most likely the group is hoping to grab a little bit of the attention that the new Mario 3DS game has attracted. µ

Pelted

To the fools who complain, why does a cartoon/game character have to wear a pelt?
I've never heard of a cartoon specifying the material of clothes.
And once you've seen one of those videos about the fur business in less civilized regions you'd be a major PETA contributor next day, regardless if they overdo it sometimes or not.

But anyway, seeing it's from a japanese company I guess it's surprising he doesn't wear a dolphin and whale-skin coat.

SHOULDNT SKIN ANIMALS ALIVE

ANIMALS WILL CERTAINLY GO EAT EACH OTHER ALIVE, EVERY SINGLE MEAL IF THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH IT - BUT PEOPLE SHOULDN'T BE VIVISECTING AND LIVE SKINNING THEM - IT JUST ISNT NECESSARY.
MARIO DOESNT ACTUALLY DO THAT THOUGH. OR... WELL I DONT THINK I FOUND EACH AND EVERY EASTER EGG IN THE GAME. HMM, DAMN.

PETA pitiful

If you're not for PETA, you're against them, or at least thats what PETA thinks! I don't condone the mistreatment of animals, and nor does 99.9 percent (probably an underestimation) of people. I'm still going to eat my steak, chicken, have eggs etc, no matter what bull PETA try and claim. In most cases, PETA and other animal activists don't show what actually happens normally in the industry, they show extremes and even acted scenes.

FACT: the head of PETA was sick, and needed medicine. PETA are extremely against animal testing of medicine, yet the medicine used was tested on animals. PETA's response to this was they knew about it but the medicine was needed so their cause can continue with their current leader. How hypocritical is that? to say its okay for their leader to have animal tested medicine!

And of course now they're chasing a fictional character that nobody actually knew or cared about the thing worn. Sales of these garments will probably increase in the territories that allow it simply because of the free advertising PETA has given them ('good enough for Mario, good enough for me' attitude)! and also very anti-PETA, rich, truly 'who gives a ...' people will probably go out and buy one just to pee PETA off!

PETA needs to get a life

PETA needs to pull out the small furry animals it has been shaving up its ass, and pull its head out of the large furry animal's ass.
