FLOGGER OF SHINY TOYS Apple's Iphone 4S has yet another problem, this time with an irritating static sound being heard by users while making calls.
Hundreds of customers who bought the latest Iphone are trying to deal with a crackling noise and sometimes an echo whenever they call someone, receive a call or record a video.
The problem appears to affect the Iphone 4S regardless of mobile carrier, internal storage size or whether it is black or white coloured.
Most users said that the noise is relatively faint, but can become increasingly annoying on long phone calls. Regardless of the severity of the problem, it appears to be quite widespread and has caused significant upset amongst customers, to the point that some have switched to rival devices.
Some carriers have suggested a phone and network reset, as well as swapping SIM cards, but these tactics have failed to fix the problem. Users have speculated that it is likely a hardware issue, such as a problem with radio interference or possibly some defective Qualcomm chips. If this is the case it will make solving the problems significantly harder, as it likely cannot be fixed with a simple software update.
Apple has so far failed to respond to the complaints, but if it does we imagine it will blame everyone but itself for the problem and possibly tell users to hold their phones in a different way, the original solution suggested for an Iphone 4 issue that caused frequent dropped calls. That incident went down in history as 'antennagate', suggesting how damaging it was to the company's reputation.
This is not the first problem to affect the Iphone 4S. Users have been complaining about extremely poor battery life on the device, which Apple claims it will fix with a software update. Despite its best efforts Apple has also failed to fix a daylight savings time change bug that has plagued its Iphones for some time. Unlike these software bugs, this latest problem could escalate until it becomes known as 'staticgate', a possibility that Apple will be keen to avoid. µ

I have this issue but, believe it or not, I am not angry, let alone furious. The iPhone is the most user-friendly phone I have had and in the knowledge that it will get fixed, I am not concerned about the issue. I have seen many other phones in use and one minor issue is not deterring me from my belief that the iPhone is the best phone out there. So, to you arguementative writers, I would love for you to stop exaggerating problems due to your own biases that you do not even have proper knowledge on.
I'm just p.o.'d how Apple support blames everyone except themselves first, then, after you've refuted all their blame, ("I've done that. . ." "I've ruled that out. . ." "I've talked to them and proved they weren't responsible. . .") "Well, maybe there's a hardware defect with your phone. . . you can try replacing it." And it still has the same issue!!
I'd say furious is about right. I can say for certain that I'm furious. Furious that the issue exists in the first place. Furious that after replacing my phone the issue still exists (some people have replaced their phones 2, 3 even 4 times with the issue present in all the replacements). Furious that despite the 43+ page thread, plus dozens of other threads on Apple's own support site, they refuse to acknowledge the issue even exists. Furious that when you call AppleCare they tell you to do all of these useless things to try and solve the problem even though they know it won't help. Furious at the thought that I'll be stuck with this phone and this stupid issue (along with the stupid increase in data consumption, among other issues).
I'd say that most of us that can hear the static are pretty annoyed to say the least. And I specified those "that can hear the static" because many iPhone 4s' have it. People just don't hear it because it's either to faint for them, they don't recognize it, or the frequency is too high for them to hear it. I will wager money that the issue is on most iPhone 4s', even if people claim that it isn't. I can hear the noise when I put my ear upto the apple symbol on the back and when I use the earpiece, whether I'm loading a site, making a call, or even if I'm listening to a voice message.
Personally, I paid too much money to have a defective phone and to have apple completely avoid acknowledging it. And that's what furiates me even more!
My new iPhone 4S has this problem to today during call the static went up till i could no longer hear the person i was talking to! And so far apple is silent.
THE TROUBLE IS, JUST 1 OUT OF 100,000 ACTUALLY USE THE IPHONE FOR CALLS. THE OTHER 99,999 ARE POSERS WHO WANT TO LOOK IMPORTANT BUT ACTUALLY HAVE NOBODY TO TALK TO.
tbh if you pay so much for a phone you shuld have it without problems.
apple make's one phone for a year and cant test it to work flawlessly (if it is a word)
apple should not find problems from other companies who make at least 10 model a year where it is normal to have some problems
and if IOS as a op system is so good then why i dont see that os on any other phone ?
Lets get furious, lets make this static gate, lets blow this out of proportion. about 10 million iPhone 4s's sold and hundreds have a problem that is reported to be at the most annoying (it does not actually stop the phone from working).
That is a defect rate on the order of 1 per 100,000. It is shocking to me that anyone could be allowed to sell a product with such an incredibly high defect rate.
Fortunately, I am one of the 99,999 that does not have this problem.
This may be a real problem effecting some customers but 'static gate"? Don't be silly.
Sony already implemented the feature in Xperia Mini Pro.
Apple should just call it i-Static, sell it as a feature that no other phone has, and charge the customer extra. I am positive apple customers will accept this because you have to be an imbecile to buy an apple product in the first place.
Don‘t get me wrong, i like Apple products such as the iPod and Macs, but Apple appears to be a “sellout“ with the iphone. From the 3GS and onwards, each iphone appears to be flawed on at least one fundamental level (overheating, dropping calls, poor battery life). Do these guys do any real world testing before they push the thing out of the door? Did they stop real world testing fearing Gizmondo will get their hands on a test unit again? Anyway, iphones clearly arent on the same quality level as the other Apple products.
IMO the only reason people still buy iphones is because of hype from the past (which is fadding quickly) and to have timely upgrades (which is fixed in Android 4.0, as manufacturers are required to sign an agreement to provide timely upgrades if they want to have access to the app market)
... for big companies to send out PR goons to do some crowd control on every possible media venue when a big slip up occurs.
Right, Tom E.?
@Tom E. - The official Apple response to any complain about an iPhone amounts to "you're holding it wrong." When enough people complain, long enough, and loudly enough, then and only then will something be done about it.
And if I were silly enough to spend the kind of money it costs to get an iPhone, I'd certainly be furious if it didn't perform perfectly. But then, I don't believe that a corporation is entitled to cheat me, just because their founder wore black turtlenecks and skipped shaving half the time. YMMV.
I can only assume you are incredibly young. Putting a "gate" suffix on a scandal predates the world wide web!
I believe it started with Watergate, which really does have "gate" on the end, and from that time, scandals had "gate" added.
I mean really, furious? Perhaps you've overstated the problem, and people's reactions? This doesn't strike me as a problem that a reasonable person would get furious about, do you? Let's hope not.
If there's a problem, go to Apple. I have had nothing but exemplary customer support from them.
But then it wouldn't be a conspiracy anymore, right?
antennaegate, staticgate...can you please come up with a more apt description and stop putting a gate on the end of every controversy.
