HP offers developers two Touchpads for £130 each

For posterity rather than development
Mon Nov 07 2011, 11:16

MAKER OF EXPENSIVE PRINTER INK HP is offering developers the chance to get their hands on a cut-price Touchpad.

HP's abandoned Touchpad tablet became something of a hit when HP announced it would clear its excess stock by offering the device at $100. At that price the tablet flew off the shelves and, while HP isn't offering consumers that deal any longer, it is offering developers the chance to purchase up to two 32GB Touchpads for $150 or £130.

As HP tried to get WebOS off the ground, the firm ran a Touchpad device loan service for developers, allowing them to test applications prior to publication on the WebOS app store. Now the company has said the loan program will be discontinued, with developers having to buy a cut-price Touchpad if they want a test device.

HP's offer is open only to registered developers, not its employees. It is hard to think that many registered developers are spending much time coding for what looks like a dead operating system, but they do have the chance to own a decent tablet or two for just £130 each.

Recently HP had offered its employees the chance to pick up Touchpads at bargain basement prices and last month Best Buy had offered a cheap Touchpad along with the purchase of an HP computer.

HP said the offer will run until either stocks are depleted or 27 November. Developers will have to request coupons prior to purchase by 18 November and the firm said all sales will be final, so if you end up with a dud Touchpad you'll have a £130 drinks tray. µ

ebay

I hope HP does some smart processing, so that all the touchpads don't end up on ebay.

*analyze IP login activity of the dev accounts (look for dups)
*check account signup activity
*Account age
*limit some accounts to 1 only
*Do some sort of background check to see if the person is real
*Check to see if the company/website is real

I think its crazy how many people just bought the device to resell it. I don't see what the point is to resell it, as its a good tablet, and making $50 and paying ebay $25 is pointless, unless you have a large quantity of them to make it worth selling them. Then again, how did someone end up with such a large quantity?

I can't believe how cheap people are 'wow i will buy a touchpad and screw a person who really wants one out of one, and then resell it for $50 more but I'm an idiot and sell on ebay, so my profit will not be much, but hey, its worth screwing someone over for $25'. Those people just need to get job. It was really hard to get a touchpad in the first place, so the people that did that have no life other then to make that $25.

Oh ya, thanks to all the news sites, this is why the developer touchpads are out of stock, as the desperate and cheap now know where to get them.

Not surprising

They are selling them in pairs so you can use them as bookshelf ends....

Once again old old news

This entire article was irrelevant even before it was published on your web site.

The HP developer offer ended days ago, and they have not taken any new tablet requests since LAST WEEK, and to quote HP directly, from last week:

"We currently have more requests for coupons than we have devices and will not be accepting any further requests."

So writing and publishing a story 7 days AFTER THE FACT is not really reporting technology news in any form of timely fashion.

For this to have been "news", Mr. Latif, you would have learned about this more than a week ago, like the OTHER tech news companies did, and then written and published this article, again, a week ago, in order for your company to retain any appearance of 'relevance'.

For hype and entertainment purposes the Inquirer is "okay", average at best, especially since Demerjian bailed. He was entertaining at least, if a bit over the top.

But for actual IT and Tech news, in a timely fashion? No.
