INTERNET SERVICE OPERATION Microsoft is claiming that Iphone users are flocking to its Hotmail email service at a rate of 100,000 per day.
While Google grapples with its IOS Gmail application, Microsoft's oft-ridiculed Hotmail service has been picking up Iphone users at the rate of 100,000 per day. Even more surprising is that Hotmail is now used on two million IOS 5 devices, with the firm claiming that the Iphone 4 and Iphone 4S make up 68 per cent of its IOS device share.
Microsoft's Hotmail is still an extremely popular email service, however the Windows firm is hoping that users will continue to use the service even when they view emails through a smartphone. Because Hotmail has been going for so long, it is likely that many people continue to use it simply because it has their email address rather than out of choice.
Recently Google launched its native IOS Gmail application but was forced to take it off the App Store due to widespread bug reports. Although Microsoft relies on IOS' built-in Mail application to service its users, claiming two million IOS 5 users is pretty impressive for a service that many regard as a spam haven.
Microsoft also claimed that 14 per cent of IOS 5 users are on the Ipad and Ipad 2.
While Microsoft's figures sound impressive, it is important to remember that the company didn't mention how many users are defecting from Hotmail. And since most people will keep their existing email account open even after moving to a new provider, Google and Yahoo might still be having the last laugh. µ
