Nokia's phone name Lumia means prostitute in Spanish slang
FINNISH PHONE MAKER Nokia has inadvertently named its latest smartphones after Spanish call girls.
It appears that the team with the job of naming the phone didn't quite complete its research. The Lumia phones Nokia recently announced translate to prostitute, whore and hooker in Spanish.
Wordmagicsoft.com translates Lumia from Spanish into English as, "whore, hooker, prostitute and streetwalker".
Once translated the smartphones' names sound like some sort of futuristic robot hookers - the Nokia Prostitute 800 and Prostitute 710. The Finnish firm might want to consider a branding tweak for the Spanish market.
The subject has been a hot topic on Twitter with some tweets including, "Lumia translates to prostitute in Spanish, eh? Man, I need to learn that language real fast," and, "Does anyone want to buy a prostitute? That's what you're getting if you buy the new nokia Lumia (Spanish for prostitute)."
In Nokia's defence, the formal and more widely used word in Spanish is 'prostituta' rather than 'lumia', so it's a street slang meaning of the word. µ

This is just a slang interpretation of the Word...
Lumia is the term coined by 20th Century Artist Thomas Wilfred to refer to art created from light.
Lumia as conceived, was a self contained and silent art, not to be combined with music or dance.
So, what matters is the actual origin of the term and not what ppl made it... And I think going by the ORIGINAL Definition, Nokia Lumia is rightly named...

Who knows, maybe the name was intentional, drawing parallels with how this device "gets around" and is "affordable while being desirable" - heh. This post is mostly "tongue in cheek" but seriously, any publicity is good publicity. So it wouldn't surprise me if it was planned.
Mitsubishi didn't change their mind when it turned out that "Pajero" means "wanker" in Spanish. They've been selling 4x4's with that name for nearly two decades and no-one seems to care. But they probably wouldn't have named it so if somebody had pointed this out before the product launch.
Spanish isn't exactly an obscure language, and you'd think that multinational corporations would send a quick email to each of their offices around the world to check for this sort of thing as part of their standard procedures for new products.
English speakers have had plenty of laughs out of stupid Chinese and Japanese translations for years. Now it's the Spaniards' turn to be amused.
Actually the word is "lumi". And the most used one isn't prostituta, that would be prostitute for you. It's puta.
