Ford adds mobile phone blocking to My Key

Ups safety level a notch
Fri Oct 28 2011, 16:23

US CAR MAKER FORD has added a 'Do Not Disturb' feature to My Key that will block mobile phones whilst driving.

In what Ford is calling an industry first, the feature will be able to block phone calls and text messages to a driver's mobile phone whilst they are driving with the My Key system. It is designed to give parents peace of mind and encourage younger drivers to concentrate on driving.

Ford MyKey Do Not Disturb

Peter Patzelt, system architect for My Key at Ford said, "MyKey can give parents peace of mind when they hand the keys over to their kids, and the new Do Not Disturb feature helps parents control another risk factor when their child gets behind the wheel."

By pairing the phone to the car with Bluetooth, My Key will block any incoming calls and save any received text messages to read later. Outgoing calls and texts remain open for emergencies.

The car will block incoming calls and texts as long as the car's engine is running and allow them to be used once it is stopped and switched off.

The My Key system will be available to European drivers with the 2012 Ford Fiesta and then the rest of the model lime-up. The auto company plans to make it a standard feature. My Key will also be able to restrict the speed of the car, set the volume of the stereo and display an early fuel level warning.

Drivers will be unable to deactivate aids such as park assist, lane departure warning and emergency assistance.

Stephen Odell, chairman and CEO at Ford Europe said, "At Ford, our mission is to provide outstanding levels of safety through accident avoidance technologies and advanced occupant protection systems." µ

What a stupid Idea

so, your saying that it is far safer for your kids to use the phone not paired via bluetooth to the car, so they then use it held up to their ear ???? which is illigal ??

Also what happens in the even of an accident, how do their phone the emergency services ?

Pair up or no engine.....

You either pair up the phone or the engine will not start.

That is not to say that another phone in the car might not be able to be used, but there again if it detects another bluetooth signal it may shut down again, whether it is the owners or not.

Too many users pair them up with peripheral (ie; jawbone, headphones) to turn them off, they are just too used to having that jawbone.

Correction: Bluetooth turned off

Can't, not Can. Obviously don't work for Ford.

Re: Bluetooth turned off

Can speak for Ford, but DO NOT DISTURB (Bluetooth) has lots of parental controls to monitor for such occurrences

Technology Already Available on Android Globally

SafeApp, LLC launched this technology on Android this year. It's called DO NOT DISTURB (Bluetooth) and only cost $4.99. No Ford required...

Darwin would weep

But if the kids aren't allowed to get themselves killed in stupid ways, what will that do the fitness of the human species as a while?

Besides, the MumKey phone blocking tech can be circumvented by... not pairing your phone. Makes it seem kind of ineffectual to me.
