Bluetooth SIG introduces Smart mark for Bluetooth 4.0
WIRELESS WONDER, The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has come up with two names to signify what devices support Bluetooth version 4.0, Bluetooth Smart and Bluetooth Smart Ready.
Whether that is any better than Bluetooth 4, which would have been the most logical suggestion we cannot say, but we can say that the way you will be able to tell if a device, tablet or smartphone, has it on board is if it bears a sticker with the Smart term.
Bluetooth Smart Ready devices are things like phones, tablets, televisions and PCs, according to the group, and the first device to come with its mark of notification is the Apple Iphone 4S.
Bluetooth Smart devices are sensor-type devices, according to the SIG, and run on single-cell batteries, like a heart rate monitor. Unlike the former class this only provide a single mode low-energy version 4.0 radio.
"Here's the truth of the matter: Bluetooth Smart and Bluetooth Smart Ready devices will revolutionise the way we collect, share and use information," said Michael Foley, PhD, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG as he explained why it was important to use the correct terms.
"In order to ensure consumers know what these extraordinary devices have to offer, we created the Bluetooth Smart and Bluetooth Smart Ready marks. These new logos will help consumers manage compatibility, and encourage manufacturers to build their best Bluetooth devices yet." µ

It does indeed seem hard to get manufacturers to keep the BT versions current, they always seem to run several versions (and thus years) behind the facts, I still see new devices being sold which 'boast' BT 2.0 or 2.1 as being cutting edge.
And then people complain BT eats so much battery or has other flaws, not being aware that each new version tries to reduce poweruse and improves quality and that they just have a very old version dating back years and that there lies their issue.
