GERMAN PHONE MAKER Gigaset has announced its SL910A, a touchscreen home phone.

At a briefing in central London this morning, The INQUIRER saw the SL910A, which the firm claims is the UK's first touchscreen home phone. It will be available from 1 November priced at £139.

The SL910A has a 3.2in touchscreen with 320x480 resolution. It will have three customisable home screens, similar to a smartphone, and provides features such as a maximum of 500 contacts, each with up to an excessive eight phone numbers.

It also has other functions like SMS messages, a calendar, reminders, photos and an answering machine that can record calls. The device will have Bluetooth and microUSB connectivity for easy transfer of contacts and will be able synchronise with Microsoft Outlook, according to Gigaset.

The SL910A can be used as a digital photo frame when the phone is not in use or as a room monitor. Martina Homburg, product manager at Gigaset told us that the naming system interestingly falls in line with that of Mercedes cars, ranging from the A-Class up to the SL-series.

Although Archos has its 35 Smart Home Phone, it doesn't seem to be on sale yet even though it was due to tip up in September. µ

Is there privacy?

Hopefully, Gagaset has built superior security functions into the handset. I am concerned about a common household telephone syncing with Outlook.

Anyone has access to goodies that are stored as part of the Outlook contact list? Some folks keep some very private notes in their contact list.
