Apple Iphone 4S users complain of yellow screens

Raise fanbois' temperatures

TOYMAKER FOR THE WELL HEELED Apple is having to deal with reports from Iphone 4S owners that the device comes with a yellow-tinged screen.

Apple might have sold four million Iphone 4S devices in just three days, but like its predecessor there have been reports that some Iphone 4S handsets might have screen problems. Iphone 4S users have been hitting Apple's forums to complain that the screen on their shiny new toy has a yellow tint.

One user describes the problem as, "My [Iphone] 4S screen is less contrasty, and the whites are more yellow (beyond 'warm') compared to my Iphone 4 screen. The colors [sic] are less vibrant, and some are pretty washed out." Another wrote, "Yes. Compared with my old Iphone 4, the [Iphone] 4S screen is washed out with a yellow tint. I'm not happy." Interestingly, another user points out differences between black and white Iphone 4S units, noting, "I recieved [sic] two Iphone 4S's, one white and one black. The black [Iphone] 4S has a VERY yellow tint to the screen - unlike any Iphone I have ever had, the white 4S has a very WHITE and normal screen."

From The INQUIRER's small sample of two Iphone 4S devices we were unable to see any visible difference between the screens on an Iphone 4 and an Iphone 4S. Reports of yellow tinged screens tends to suggest colour temperature issues, and anyone who has played around with digital photographs in Photoshop will know that increasing the colour temperature will result in a warm yellow tint appearing. However colour temperature doesn't explain why some Iphone 4S devices are exhibiting this "feature" while others aren't.

While it's unlikely that Apple will face anywhere near the level of criticism as it did during Antennagate, if the reports of yellow-tinged Iphone 4S screens grow it will only serve to highlight, once again, that buying early production run Apple products can be a risky practice. µ

Splotch vs. tint!

Weren't there two problems last year?

The splotch in the corner that went away after a while, and the screen tint that was inherent in the manufacture or color calibration?

I have two iPhone 4s--one is markedly warm-yellow, the other cool-blue. The yellow cast shows photos better and has deeper blacks. The cool-blue does better when I want a white background.

This was reported early in the iPhone 4 launch last year

The explanation I heard was that it was the glue used in the glass/LCD layers that hadn't fully set yet but with some repeated use (heating up a bit when active or in your pocket) the issue would disappear. I never heard anything about it after a few weeks after launch so I assume that was correct.

So maybe this is the same problem? Makes sense, as the innards of the phone are different but the case and screen are identical to last year's model.

A Golden Delicious colour.

Get used to it.

Le Crunch is that it could be lime green and you'd be expected to love it.

Colour Temp?

A bit geeky I know BUT..Increasing colour Temperature from daylight set at around 5500-6500 Kelvin results in a cooler (more blue) look, whilst decreasing the colour temperature increases warmer (yellow) tones in the white.
Just in case it makes a difference to the iphone 4s settings

Guess I don't need to make that fake pregnancy test app after all to get people to yellow their Iapple pad, they come that way, oh well it was a great idea.
