Samsung celebrates 30 million Galaxy S smartphone sales

Champagne corks pop for vague data

KOREAN ELECTRONICS GIANT Samsung is celebrating 30 million sales of its Galaxy S and Galaxy S II smartphones.

Samsung's Galaxy S handset was the firm's star performer in 2010, proving that it could finally compete with Apple's Iphone, and its sales counter has now hit 20 million. Samsung followed that up with the Galaxy S II at Mobile World Congress and has since claimed to have sold 10 million of those devices too.

JK Shin, president and head of Samsung's Mobile Communications Business said, "Since its launch only five months ago, Galaxy SII has seen tremendous sales success and garnered enthusiastic reviews from consumers and mobile industry watchers across the globe. This is in addition to the continued sales momentum behind Galaxy S, which we launched at Mobile World Congress 2010 as continues to be a run-away success with consumers."

What Shin didn't mention is the fact that Samsung rarely, if ever, distinguishes between actual sales and channel sales figures. While there's no doubt that both the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II are extremely popular handsets, we would take the 30 million sales figure with a pinch of salt.

Samsung's figures, even if they are channel sales figures, sound impressive until you realise Apple has managed to sell four million Iphone 4S devices in just three days.

Samsung is expected to unveil the Nexus Prime, the second handset to come out of its collaboration with Google, tomorrow. µ

somebody is a hater

What does 4million sold in 3days have to do with 30million sales by Samsung, you would have sounded less biased had you quoted apple iphone 4 and 4S combined sales and even channel sales. This was a very poorly written article.
