Occupy Wall Street crackdown is postponed

Plans to move protesters shelved for now
Fri Oct 14 2011, 14:12

PLANS TO CLEAR Zuccotti Park of Occupy Wall Street protesters have been postponed.

The move to clear up the park seemed to be a cover for the actual aim, which was to break up protesters and move them on. However, this morning Brookfield Office Properties said that it has postponed its request to clear the park, according to Bloomberg.

"Brookfield believes they can work out an arrangement with the protesters that will ensure the park remains clean, safe, available for public use and that the situation is respectful of residents and businesses downtown," said deputy mayor Caswell Holloway in an e-mail to Bloomberg.

When the clean up was first announced protesters moved to carry out the work instead and marshalled their own clean up crews and equipment. "Bring the brooms! Lets do some #wallstcleanup," said one message from the group on Twitter. "Raise your brooms high in the air, #occupywallstreet! It's time for #wallstcleanup," said another.

Perhaps hoping to avoid confrontation, Brookfield CEO Ric Clark wrote a letter to the City in which he explained that the the cleaning had been delayed "a few days while we attempt to work out an arrangement with the protesters".

The news was immediately welcomed by the @OccupyWallStNYC Twitter account, which tweeted, "People power triumphs! Brookfield declares indefinitely postponed cleaning! #wewon," it said.

This weekend the Occupy movement goes global, with protests scheduled across the world, including the UK's financial district in the City of London. µ

This isn't an organized Pep rally that was planned in advance. This is a growing surge of democratic protest anger being displayed. Therefore, the city should (as part of the gov't's responsibilities) provide facilities to keep their city clean and safe of hazards and they can do it with all the money they make off of the Wall Street Corruption.

Your ignorant point of having protesters secure their own facilities is a pompous attack on the ability of poor people to protest gov't corruption. The next step is to convert all property to privately owned in the city to prevent people from being able to protest as they'll technically have no right to stand still in the eyes of the (corrupt system of)law if no one agrees to provide them a designated area. This is akin to saying you can have a voice but you must have it somewhere where no one can hear or be inconvenienced by it or be able to pay us for the right to hear your voice.

@ Hucklefuck - Could you be any more clueless and daft about what democracy and freedom mean and what it takes to keep them intact? I'm glad that your so content with such low personal standards as to be financially better than China, Cuba and N.Korea but most Americans expect a little more in the way of responsible leadership and controlled corruption.

Duh

Hopefully this movement will continue to spread, and the evil capitalism will be vanquished. Maybe some day the USA can be as free and prosperous as China, Cuba, or North Korea.

However

It's still a good movement, it won't change everything but what people sort of would be happy with is to go back to the old level of corruption and disdain - max, which was bad enough, there just has to be SOME sort of limit on it all.
Unbridled capitalism works as well as unlimited soviet style communism, but the soviets had the brainpower to see that in the end. The US powerbase of course isn't so strong in that area ;/
And I fear myself that no amount of shouting or examples or even violence can make that group smarter ;/

THE REAL STORY

THE REAL STORY IS THAT O.W.S. POWERCRAPPERS ARE SOILING THE SOIL.
IF THEY HAD A SCIENTOLOGY TIE-IN THEN THIS WOULD BE REAL NEWS, BUT ALAS.

nothingburger

Let them eat cake. They are stupid enough to vote Democrat or Republican again.

A general strike would be the only way to effect change.

PoV clarified.

The protesters are also americans, who also think it's normal, and who are also being barbaric and would not do anything when you give them the power.
And incidentally the 99% are just as guilty for the mess with the economy as the 1%. they bought and bought on credit and took mortgages they can't really afford and let themselves be tricked and they empower the whole setup and vote in the people in power and buy iphones and sign up to AT&T (who are an exemplification of bad capitalism and cronyism).

(Not that I'm exactly perfect..)

@ W

I am sorry we barbarians are not the French, who protest so often they have permanent facilities to support them.

"Sacre bleu! My 30 hour work week is too much for me to handle!"

Last time I checked, the protesters are camping and defecating on private property. Brookfield set down rules for the protesters to use their property (at no cost mind you), which they disregarded.

Perhaps it is the responsibility of the protest organizers to secure facilities for themselves. People's over reliance on the government to provide facilities when they didn't plan in advance is part of what they are protesting against.

Going to say it.

In a civilized country you'd expect the local authorities to get some sanitary facilities set up if there is an event with thousands of people.

But oh, this is in the US, nm then.
Freaking barbarians, and it's what all westerns governments are striving so hard to emulate..

Um.. Not quite..

Brrokfield was actually trying to get the protesters to temporarily move so they could bring in a professional power washing crew to hose down the park. There have been numerous reports of the unsanitary conditions within the park due to the lack of proper facilities.

Not everything is a conspiracy.
