Anonymous is legion, leaderless, and better than you think

Security pros weigh in on the hactivists

THE HACKTIVIST GROUP Anonymous is only showing a small sample of its security and hacking skills, according to a panel of security experts including ex-HBGary Federal president Aaron Barr.

Barr, who was once a red flag to Anonymous' bull, spoke at the RSA Security Conference in London about his experience with the group and his perceptions of it. Although some of the hacks are mischevious or simple in nature, they do not tell the full story, he said, and hide bigger and better strengths.

The man who saw his personal and work accounts eviscerated by the hackers is a regular commentator on the group, and despite spending less time in its IRC channels, he still likes to keep his hand in.

Barr was at day one of the Occupy Wall Street protests - no one recognised him - and like the rest of the panel, he explained that Anonymous is a loose linked, anarchic group of personalities and people that could include your mum.

"They are chaotic," he said. "Anonymous is a very complex organisation. Anyone can join and anyone can co-opt the movement. There is some order, but there is also a lot of flexibility with the group."

"I spent some time at Occupy Wall Street," he added. "it's quite a mix... From the young to the old, affluent to the poor. They all had anger, animosity or a moral code they were trying to justify. It is impossible to put them into demographic buckets."

There are, or were key leaders, though and Barr and the rest of the panel said that it was likely that some of those people that have been arrested, Topiary and the two Kaylas for example, were, as far as the police and panel were concerned, significant movers in the organisation.

Those key members share access to the communications systems used by the group, according to Barr, and he said that Topiary, Jake Davis, had already admitted that he had sold access to his Twitter account. Other Twitter accounts, he added, would also be controlled by multiple users, making it hard to track down the authors or profile them.

However, these members are the real muscle behind the operation, according to Barr. "The people with real skill are a much smaller number than the majority," he said.

Barr, of course, had his own taste of the hackers and he said that the experience was almost unreal. He called it "that whole mess". Although he refused to comment on the impact on the hack on the company that he worked for, HBGary Federal, he said that for him personally it felt, "unreal" and "almost like a dream". We presume he meant nightmare. µ

bro..

i like the thing about how golden aged America will shit out. but really..
even though you sound really right in saying that anonymous really is just wasting time because whats a a attempt will stay an attempted. but naw

there hackers and i think the key thing is they know stuff about computers that
is like "god" knowing things about quarks

like i guess what im saying is i assume the main people in the group will just
"hack" the world into any thing i believe that they could end the internet for every one if they wanted... well because they can

were talking about people who raised computers not people who were raised by computers.

people need to just chill and realize what the group knows and is well off at

if they wanted to hack you..
you would be hacked..

like

if shit needs to be tossed in to the fan

let the arm that threw it. be an anonymous one

Thanks for the Advertising

I agree. The more Anon hackers they throw in prison the better, because for every 1 imprisoned 100 more are inspired. I get gitty every time I see Anon in the news. Anon is not 1 person, it is an idea, and you can't arrest an idea.

Reality Check Please!

One day . . . soon, many wildly disparate groups will polarize, coalesce, gel, and form a new American party for the people, not for the corporation. In heaven, all things are possible. America is doomed to corpocracy and will die trying to import foreign oil for impractical gasoline motor-cars long after the Pan Eurasian Empire succeeds them and America falls into an awkward sort of Third World-ship compost of patriots still believing the 1960's styled "Great American Corporate and Capitalist Propaganda Whore's" ridiculous "American Dream" and her "sales pitch bull Shiite", fed to them at their mothers breasts. After this generation dies off, fails to even propagate due to unemployment and lack of even decent medical care, the Chinese emigration will begin in earnest, and great McMansions, huge land-cruisers, SUV's will be relegated to the history books, a new high density interdependent, closely knit, closely housed, Asian styled civilization will erupt in America, and absorb any surviving white or yellow skinned out-lyers into its mesh. We watch now the end of the “Golden Age” of America, once supported by the dying "Cheap Oil Era" and see a day when the "Honda 50" will be more popular int he U.S.A. than the current day Harley Davidson's. This will happen in decades, not even a century! This new empire in America will be powered by Chinese designed, Thorium fueled LFTR reactors, Thorium fueled CANDU reactors, www.theoildrum.com/node/4971 as the worlds remaining oil goes to satisfy an Asian market paying in non-depreciated Yuan, not over-leveraged, fiat, "Funny money" from America: be it called U.S. dollars, Ameros, or whatever the financial savants of the West wish. Anonymous see this through unprejudiced eyes, and will hasten its occurrence, to spare the Great Hulking American Neanderthal a prolonged demise. This recent Neanderthal born of European stock cultivated by corporate interests for their purposes, is no longer practical or sustainable or useful for the generation of ROI in the modern age and must go! This is the great paradigm shift Americans suffer today.

If wishes were horses

If politicians and police dept worked properly there would be no Anon, Tea party, Occupy * or other groups like this. Because corrupt people would be in jail and not in charge of the worlds finances and governments.
