THE INQUIRER was the proud host of day one of Mozilla's Association of Online Publishers (AOP) Hack Day.
Today's was held at The INQUIRER towers and the focus was on HTML version 5 (HTML5) and the benefits it brings to developers, such as allowing applications and web sites to work on different devices and operating systems. The event previously has been held in Scotland, Chile and Kenya.
The aim of Mozilla's Hack Day is to bring together web designers, developers, graphic designers, journalists and user interface experts to build new tools and explore new ideas.
The event kicked off with some breakfast and networking among delegates, followed by some idea pitching. Some delegates came with pre-planned ideas and some were made up on the spot. The teams then formed around the people with ideas.
Mozilla describes it as, "A dynamic day of fast-paced real-time software development, an experiment in demonstrating the future of publishing, today."
Some of the projects conjured up today included a widget for pulling together what the current hot gossip or buzz is about, a dynamic video wall and a web application to help the user find out if they will arrive somewhere on time.
The event continues tomorrow at the AOP Digital Publishing Summit at Westminster Bridge Park Plaza. The teams will carry on working with their projects and apply final touches towards the afternoon. Each project will be presented to a panel of judges, and then the winners will be announced and awarded prizes. µ
