SOCIAL NETWORKING ALTERNATIVE Diaspora has asked its users to give it a collective hug in the form of cash donations.
Diaspora has recently come into beta but it still needs work, according to its developers, and work needs money. While some beta invitations have gone out, some hopeful users, tired of the anti-personal privacy affecting alternatives, are still waiting.
"You've been incredibly patient in waiting for an invitation. We're still working as fast as we can to get yours to you, and we're sorry it's taking so long," wrote the firm in an email to its followers.
"In the meantime, though, we're reaching out to ask if you'd be willing to help us go faster. Every dollar we've spent building Diaspora has come from the generosity of our community, from people like you who believe in what we're building, and have given some of their hard-earned money to support our work.... Every time someone contributes, it feels like a huge, warm hug."
Smallish contributions of $25 are requested, but the team will accept any amount its followers are prepared to give. Those that donate will be given an invitation to join the beta network sooner than those that just request one, but according to the email everyone will get one sooner or later. µ
