ONLINE RETAILER Amazon's next generation Kindle e-reader is now on sale in the UK for a reasonable £89.

The latest Kindle e-reader goes on sale today and is set to be one of the most popular devices this Christmas at its new lower price. The device is available to buy from Amazon now in a WiFi only model.

We spoke to Dixons, which thinks the Kindle 4 will sell out within 24 hours. The high street retailer told us it will have the device on sale in most of its stores by lunch time today.

Key factors are the competitive price of the gadget and the canny timing of its launch leading up to the Christmas period, according to Dixons. The firm told us that it has between three and four times the stock on hand than it did for the Kindle 3 but couldn't give us specific figures.

Mark Slater, category director at Dixons said, "The Kindle is one of the most popular e-readers in our stores and we are expecting the next generation Kindle 4 to fly off the shelves."

The Kindle e-reader has been an extremely popular product and the latest edition is bound to sell well. It is 30 per cent lighter and 18 per cent smaller than before with the same 6in screen. Amazon claims it offers faster page turning and can fit in your pocket. µ

Update
The INQUIRER popped along and spoke with sales staff in the Dixons store on Oxford Street today who looked bemused when asked if they had seen this anticipated rush, saying they didn't think they'd even sold one unit and that there were still around 40 devices still in stock.
